Arsenal Wanted Palhinha Before Zubimendi Deal
Arsenal engaged in negotiations with Bayern Munich for a potential transfer of midfielder João Palhinha during the early days of the summer transfer window, according to reports.
The Gunners aimed to bolster their midfield following the exits of Jorginho and Thomas Partey. A deal for Martín Zubimendi was secured earlier this month, having long been in the pipeline for much of the calendar year.
Despite confidence in completing the Zubimendi deal later in the window, BILD reported that Arsenal opened discussions with Palhinha even before the Club World Cup commenced last month.
The club had intended to bring in both Zubimendi and Palhinha, with the latter’s experience in the Premier League from his time at Fulham proving especially attractive. Palhinha impressed during two seasons at Fulham between 2022 and 2024, ultimately earning a £48.6 million switch to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
