Ballon d’Or Recap: Donnarumma and Gyökeres Celebrate Awards
The Italian goalkeeper takes home the prestigious Yashin Trophy, while Arsenal’s Swedish striker secures the Gerd Müller Trophy for best goalscorer.
Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres were among the winners at the prestigious Ballon d’Or 2025 ceremony, staged at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
Donnarumma, who made the move to City from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this September, collected the Yashin Trophy, an award given annually to the world’s best goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Swedish forward Gyökeres was recognised with the Gerd Müller Trophy after finishing as the top scorer across club and international football in the 2024/25 season.
Donnarumma’s Second Yashin Trophy
This marks the second time Donnarumma has claimed the Yashin Trophy, having previously earned the accolade in 2021 during his PSG spell.
His triumph also makes him the fourth Premier League goalkeeper to secure the award. The others are Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, who lifted it in consecutive years (2023 and 2024), and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker in 2019.
Speaking after receiving the trophy, Donnarumma expressed his pride: “There are a lot of brilliant goalkeepers around the world, so this is incredibly special to me. I am pleased with my performances over the last year and the trophies I have won, but I know I can still improve.
“That’s a major reason why I chose to move to Manchester City. I am now fully focused on working with Pep Guardiola and his staff to develop my game even further and help my new team to more success.”
Gyökeres Follows Haaland
Gyökeres secured the Gerd Müller Trophy with a prolific tally of 54 goals in 52 appearances across Sporting CP and the Swedish national side. The award is presented to the player with the highest combined goal count for club and country over the season.
After his summer move to Arsenal, the striker has already made his mark in the Premier League, netting three goals in five matches.
It is only the second time a Premier League footballer has received this award. The first was Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who won in 2023 after scoring 56 times.
