Premier League Recap: Arsenal Stay Top, Spurs and Villa Stun Rivals
Everton 0–3 Tottenham: Van de Ven at the Double as Spurs Break New Ground
Tottenham Hotspur ended a six-match winless run against Everton with a commanding 3–0 victory, becoming the first away side to win at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton’s unbeaten home record vanished early when Micky van de Ven nodded in from close range after Rodrigo Bentancur recycled a corner. The Toffees thought they had levelled soon after through Jake O’Brien’s header from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s delivery, but the goal was ruled out as Iliman Ndiaye was adjudged offside for obstructing Guglielmo Vicario.
Spurs maintained composure in a hostile atmosphere, with Bentancur nearly doubling the lead from the edge of the box. Another set-piece proved Everton’s undoing before the break as Pedro Porro’s corner was flicked home again by Van de Ven for his fifth goal of the season.
Ndiaye almost pulled one back after half-time, his deft flick drifting narrowly wide. Richarlison then spurned a golden chance against his former club following James Tarkowski’s poor back-header. Everton pressed late, but Merlin Röhl’s close-range header went over as David Moyes’ side suffered their first home defeat. Pape Matar Sarr sealed the win in stoppage time, moving Spurs up to third ahead of their London derby with Chelsea.
Wolves 2–3 Burnley: Foster’s Last-Gasp Winner Sinks Winless Hosts
Burnley earned their first away win of the season as Lyle Foster struck in the 94th minute to extend Wolves’ winless league start to nine matches.
The hosts came close early on when Rodrigo Gomes’ cross forced Martin Dúbravka into a save, but Jhon Arias fired the rebound into the side netting. Burnley hit back immediately, as Quilindschy Hartman’s cross found Zian Flemming, who volleyed in his first Premier League goal. The pair combined again for Burnley’s second, with Hartman’s low ball across goal tapped in by Flemming.
Wolves clawed one back through Jørgen Strand Larsen’s penalty after Santiago Bueno was clipped by Josh Cullen, before Marshall Munetsi’s header on the stroke of half-time completed the comeback.
After the break, both sides traded chances, with Arias’ free-kick rattling the crossbar and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde testing Dúbravka late on. But in stoppage time, Hannibal’s clever pass released Foster, who coolly slotted home past Sam Johnstone to clinch a dramatic 3–2 victory. Wolves boss Vítor Pereira faces mounting pressure as his side remain bottom of the table.
Bournemouth 2–0 Nottingham Forest: Tavernier’s Corner Magic Keeps Cherries Flying
Bournemouth stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions with a comfortable 2–0 win over Nottingham Forest, who are now eight league games without a victory.
After drawing 3–3 at Crystal Palace, the Cherries struck midway through the first half when Marcus Tavernier’s looping corner deceived Matz Sels and found the net. Replays showed the ball had brushed a Bournemouth player before going out, frustrating new Forest boss Sean Dyche.
Eli Junior Kroupi doubled the lead before half-time, firing from distance for his fourth goal in three games. Forest improved after the break, with Morgan Gibbs-White dictating play, though their best chance saw Neco Williams’ effort fly wide. Gibbs-White later forced a fine save from Đorđe Petrović, but Bournemouth held firm to move up to second, with fans beginning to dream of European qualification.
Aston Villa 1–0 Manchester City: Cash Strikes as Champions Fall
Aston Villa handed Manchester City their first league defeat since August, as Matty Cash’s early goal gave the Villans a fourth straight win.
City, who had scored first in their previous ten games, fell behind inside 20 minutes when a short corner found Cash, who cut inside Bernardo Silva before firing past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Erling Haaland almost levelled but was denied by Emiliano Martínez.
An injury to Emiliano Buendía saw Jadon Sancho make his first Premier League home appearance for Villa, quickly linking up with John McGinn, whose deflected effort went close.
City pressed after the break, with Savinho’s attempts blocked in quick succession. Guardiola introduced Nico González, Nico O’Reilly and Jérémy Doku, but Sancho nearly doubled Villa’s lead with two close-range efforts saved by Donnarumma. Haaland thought he’d equalised in stoppage time, only for the flag to rule it out. Villa move to seventh, just one point behind fourth-placed City, ending the champions’ nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
Arsenal 1–0 Crystal Palace: Eze Haunts Former Club as Gunners Stay Top
Premier League leaders Arsenal made it four straight wins with a 1–0 triumph over Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.
Palace started brightly, rebounding from their midweek European disappointment, but were undone six minutes before the interval by their former player, Eberechi Eze. Gabriel Magalhães headed a free-kick back across goal, and Eze’s acrobatic first-time strike gave Arsenal the lead with their second shot on target.
After the break, Arsenal pushed for a second. Declan Rice’s cross was headed onto the bar by Gabriel, before Rice’s follow-up was saved by Dean Henderson. Bukayo Saka went close soon after, as the Gunners’ attacking rhythm improved markedly.
Arteta’s side remained solid at the back, recording a fifth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions. The result keeps Arsenal four points clear of Bournemouth and extends their unbeaten home record this season. Palace, winless in four, remain in the top half despite their second league defeat.
