Sunderland vs Wolves Preview

  • Sunderland to win
  • Menos de 2,5 goles

Sunderland’s return to the Premier League has gone better than even the most optimistic supporters could have hoped. Despite a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on matchday seven, the Black Cats remain in the top half of the table (W3, D2, L2), proving that their aggressive pressing and dynamic attack are well-suited to the top division.

One of the more striking aspects of Sunderland’s season so far has been their tendency to grow into games. They’ve scored just once before half-time in the league, which underlines their status as slow starters, but they’ve consistently found a way to turn matches around in the second period. Their ability to finish strongly has been especially evident at the Stadium of Light, where they are unbeaten this season in the league (W2, D1).

Victory here would not only consolidate their top-half position but also mark a slice of history — it would be the first time since the 1968/69 campaign that Sunderland have collected ten points from their opening four home games in a top-flight season. With the crowd firmly behind them and a newly confident side brimming with energy, the hosts have every reason to believe they can extend their strong home run.

At the opposite end of the table, Wolves are enduring a torrid start under Vítor Pereira. The Old Gold prop up the Premier League standings after a run of seven matches without a win (D2, L5). However, back-to-back draws in their last two league outings at least represent small steps in the right direction after five straight defeats to start the campaign.

A curious trend has emerged in recent weeks — Wolves have actually started games quite well, opening the scoring in each of their last three Premier League matches. Unfortunately for Pereira, his side have failed to hold on in any of them (D2, L1). That lack of composure and defensive stability has been a major factor in their struggles, and fixing it will be crucial if they are to climb off the bottom of the table.

Their away form offers little encouragement. Wolves have scored just once on their travels in the league this season (D1, L2) and are winless in their last five away top-flight matches (D1, L4). Their lack of cutting edge on the road, combined with defensive lapses, has made life extremely difficult, and a trip to one of the league’s form home sides is hardly the fixture they would have wanted.

Historia del cara a cara

This will be the first meeting between Sunderland and Wolves since 2018, adding a layer of intrigue to the contest. Historically, Sunderland have enjoyed the upper hand in recent encounters, keeping three consecutive clean sheets against Wolves (W1, D2).

While Wolves have fared slightly better in Premier League meetings overall (W4, D1, L1), the Stadium of Light has not been a happy hunting ground for them. Sunderland have won five of the last seven home clashes between the sides in all competitions (D1, L1), suggesting that home advantage could once again play a significant role.

Estadísticas y rachas

  • Sunderland have won exactly three corners in four of their last six league matches.
  • All three of Sunderland’s Premier League home games this season have been goalless after 60 minutes.
  • The home team on the day has scored exactly one first-half goal in five of Wolves’ last six league fixtures.
  • Five of Wolves’ last six Premier League away matches have produced under 2.5 goals.

The statistics point towards a slow-burning contest that may open up only in the later stages, particularly given Sunderland’s habit of striking late and Wolves’ struggles to convert early leads into wins.

Jugadores clave a seguir y jugadores que faltan

Wilson Isidor has been Sunderland’s standout performer in front of goal, netting three times in the league — all of them coming at home and after the 70th minute.

His knack for late goals has been crucial to the Black Cats’ success at the Stadium of Light.

For Wolves, defender Santiago Bueno has shown his threat from set pieces, having opened the scoring in their last away game, one of three first-goal strikes in his last four club goals.

Sunderland remain without Reinildo Mandava, who serves the final match of his suspension, while Habib Diarra also misses out through injury. Wolves, meanwhile, are still without Matt Doherty, depriving them of experience and width on the right-hand side.

Betting Analysis and Prediction

This fixture pits one of the division’s early overachievers against its current underperformers, and the form book suggests a home win is the logical outcome. Sunderland’s energy, confidence, and resilience at home contrast sharply with Wolves’ fragility and lack of away goals.

The hosts’ ability to grow into games and strike late makes them particularly dangerous against a side like Wolves, who have struggled to sustain their early intensity. While goals may be at a premium given both sides’ recent trends, Sunderland’s superior balance and momentum should see them edge this contest.

Predicted Scoreline: Sunderland 2–0 Wolves
