Premier League Recap: Spurs Draw, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United Lose
Tottenham 1-1 Wolves
Tottenham Hotspur were denied a return to second place after a stoppage-time equaliser salvaged a point against bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs dominated the first half, with Mohammed Kudus twice denied by Sam Johnstone, while Richarlison and Lucas Bergvall also went close. Wolves threatened just before the break, as Matt Doherty hit the woodwork.
The visitors stunned the hosts shortly before the hour when Santiago Bueno turned in from a corner for his first goal for Wolves. Spurs pushed but were frustrated until João Palhinha struck from the edge of the box deep into stoppage time, sealing a 1-1 draw. Wolves claimed their first point of the season but remain bottom, while Spurs climbed to third.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Sunderland
Nottingham Forest’s poor run under Ange Postecoglou continued as they lost 1-0 at home to Sunderland, extending their winless start to five games. Forest dominated possession but wasted chances, with Chris Wood missing a free header. Sunderland took the lead when Granit Xhaka’s free-kick was headed in at the far post by Omar Alderete, though the award of the set-piece was controversial.
Forest pressed hard after the break, with Elliot Anderson and substitutes Omari Hutchinson and Igor Jesus all denied by Robin Roefs. Wood then squandered two golden chances late on, failing to convert from close range. Sunderland held firm to secure their first away league win of the season, moving into the top four.
Chelsea 1-3 Brighton
Chelsea’s 12-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League ended as Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Fernández gave the Blues the lead, heading in after good work by Moisés Caicedo and Reece James. But Trevoh Chalobah’s red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity shifted the momentum.
Danny Welbeck levelled in the 77th minute before Maxim De Cuyper nodded in his first Brighton goal. Welbeck added a late second to seal the victory. Brighton ended a poor defensive run with a vital result, while Chelsea were left ruing another costly red card.
Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool
Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season ended in dramatic fashion as Crystal Palace struck late to win 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Ismaïla Sarr opened the scoring early, pouncing from close range after a corner. Liverpool improved, with Ibrahima Konaté and Alexander Isak going close, while Jean-Philippe Mateta struck the post for Palace before half-time.
The Reds pressed after the interval and eventually levelled through Federico Chiesa, who scrambled home amid VAR checks. But in the 97th minute, Eddie Nketiah slotted home the winner, extending Palace’s unbeaten run to a club-record 18 games and moving them within three points of the leaders.
Leeds 2-2 Bournemouth
Leeds United were denied victory as Eli Junior Kroupi rescued a point for Bournemouth in stoppage time. Despite early chances for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the visitors struck first through Antoine Semenyo’s free-kick. Leeds levelled before half-time via Joe Rodon’s header and then went ahead through Sean Longstaff’s fine finish off the post.
Jack Harrison and Rodon threatened further goals, but deep into stoppage time Kroupi volleyed in a dramatic equaliser. Bournemouth temporarily moved up to second but dropped to fifth by the end of the evening, while Leeds slipped to 11th.
Manchester City 5-1 Burnley
Manchester City maintained their dominance over Burnley with a thumping 5-1 win at the Etihad. An own goal from Maxime Estève put City ahead, but Jaidon Anthony equalised for Burnley before half-time. The Clarets threatened after the break, with Lyle Foster and Quilindschy Hartman going close, but City soon took control.
Matheus Nunes restored the lead with a volley, before another Estève own goal extended the advantage. Erling Haaland struck twice late on to seal a comfortable win. City have now won 23 of their last 25 league games against promoted sides.
Brentford 3-1 Manchester United
Brentford climbed away from relegation trouble with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United. Igor Thiago scored twice inside 20 minutes, capitalising on defensive lapses. Benjamin Šeško halved the deficit for United, but the Red Devils wasted chances, including a Bruno Fernandes penalty saved by Caoimhín Kelleher.
United pressed late on, but Mathias Jensen’s stoppage-time strike sealed Brentford’s win. The Bees have now lost just once in seven home matches, while United’s away struggles continued with an eighth game without victory.
