Premier League Recap: Black Cats Draw with Everton
Sunderland extended their unbeaten home run in the Premier League with a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Everton, who have now managed just one win in their last eight games in all competitions.
It was the Toffees who started brightest, wasting no time to threaten as Jake O’Brien fired narrowly wide within seconds of kick-off. Their early dominance paid off in the 15th minute when Iliman Ndiaye dispossessed Noah Sadiki, surged past several defenders, and coolly curled a left-footed effort into the far corner to give Everton the lead.
Sunderland, who had been enjoying one of their strongest starts to a top-flight campaign in years, found themselves under pressure. Jack Grealish hit the post from distance before Thierno Barry missed a golden chance, scooping over from close range. The hosts began to grow into the game before half-time, creating a flurry of chances — Daniel Ballard’s strike was even cleared off the line by Michael Keane to keep Everton in front.
The second half began explosively, and Sunderland levelled just 45 seconds after the restart. Enzo Le Fée teed up Granit Xhaka, whose long-range strike deflected off James Tarkowski and crashed in off the underside of the bar. With momentum swinging, the Black Cats pushed forward relentlessly, pinning Everton back and denying them any meaningful possession in the final third for much of the half.
Despite their dominance, Sunderland couldn’t find a winner, and the late stages offered little in the way of clear chances, aside from Vitaliy Mykolenko’s speculative effort from range. The draw ensured Sunderland’s unbeaten home record remained intact and lifted them back into the top four, having now claimed a league-high eight points from losing positions this season.
For Everton, the result was another missed opportunity. Their bright opening faded as the game progressed, leaving manager David Moyes still searching for answers ahead of their upcoming home clash with Fulham.
