Manchester United vs Twente Report
Scorers: Eriksen 35’; Lammers 68’
In their opening game of the UEFA Europa League (UEL) campaign, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Twente at Old Trafford, as the visitors secured a valuable point in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
Early Dominance and Eriksen’s Opener
Participating in the UEL for the fourth time in 11 years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, Manchester United faced off against Dutch side FC Twente, where current United manager Erik ten Hag began his professional career.
Despite United’s strong start, it was Twente who had the first opportunity, as Sam Lammers found himself in the box but was unable to convert.
Manchester United soon took control of the match, with Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen testing the Twente defence.
Eriksen, already in fine form at Old Trafford, made the breakthrough in the 35th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing into the top corner to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Twente’s Resurgence in the Second Half
Twente came out stronger in the second half, putting pressure on United early on. Their efforts almost paid off when Sem Steijn attempted a clever low free-kick aimed at the far post, forcing United goalkeeper André Onana into a smart save to keep the hosts ahead.
In an attempt to regain control, Ten Hag introduced Alejandro Garnacho just past the hour mark. However, the equaliser came in the 68th minute when Twente’s fullback Bart van Rooij went on a driving run forward.
Although he lost possession, a hesitant Eriksen was dispossessed by Lammers, who capitalised on the mistake, advancing on goal and beating Onana at his near post to level the score.
United’s Late Push and Missed Chances
Seeking to regain the lead, Ten Hag made a triple substitution, bringing on Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, and Rasmus Højlund.
The Red Devils pressed for a winner, with Fernandes and Garnacho coming close to restoring United’s lead as their efforts went just over the bar. However, they were unable to find the finishing touch, leaving United with just a point against one of the lower-seeded teams in the competition.
Conclusion: Frustration for United, Confidence for Twente
The 1-1 draw at Old Trafford means Manchester United will need to regroup as they continue their UEL campaign, having missed the opportunity to claim all three points.
Meanwhile, FC Twente, considered outsiders before kickoff, will be buoyed by their performance and the result, leaving them with plenty of confidence as they aim to progress in the tournament.
