The Premier League 2024/25 season might have kicked off, but transfer activity is still in full swing. Here is our EPL transfers and news round-up from today’s papers.
EPL Transfers
Crystal Palace are still in danger of losing Marc Guehi to Newcastle United. The Magpies are determined to land the English international and are still in talks with the Eagles over the defender, whose rise to fame has been one of the great stories of the last two seasons in English top flight football. It is expected that those talks will go on until a deal is reached, as Newcastle believe Guehi is the only missing piece in their team (Fabrizio Romano for Caught Offside).
In North London, there is a defender that could be useful to the Magpies if they cannot get Guehi, however, there are no links between both parties. The defender is Poland international Jakub Kiwior, who has effectively been replaced in the squad by Riccardo Calafiori and the return of Dutchman Jurrien Timmer to the team following a season-long injury layoff. Reports indicate that he will seek a move elsewhere after falling down the pecking order (Fabrizio Romano for Caught Offside).
Still in London, West Ham United are looking to bring in Tammy Abraham, whose time at AS Roma has unofficially come to an end. The Giallorossi brought in LaLiga’s top scorer Artem Dovbyk to take over from Romelu Lukaku and Abraham, who played second fiddle to the Belgian despite a good first two seasons, will remain a backup option. The former Chelsea man will leave as a result, and the Hammers are in the best position to sign him before the summer transfer window ends in a few weeks (Gazzetta dello Sport).
West Ham are set to receive £1.2 million from Manchester City for free agent Diving Mubamba. The Hammers will receive this fee as compensation for developing the player since he was eight years old, despite the player no longer being on their books. Mubamba’s medical has been scheduled, and this will see the 19-year-old striker finally earn his first senior contract as he looks to begin his top flight football career (MEN).
City, meanwhile, continues to look for ways to offload João Cancelo, whose only goal is to return to Barcelona following a loan spell in 2023/24. They want €25 million for the defender, but Barcelona wants a loan with an option to buy next season for €20 million. As a result, City has approached a few Italian teams to market the player. Cancelo is believed to be doing all he can to broker a deal between Barça and City so that the saga can come to an end in the coming weeks (MEN).
Liverpool have started the 2024/25 season brightly under new manager Arne Slot, but they remain the only top flight team in Europe to have not signed any players. There are transfer talks ongoing, however, with reports claiming that one deal will be completed at the very least before the end of the summer window. The players being linked to the club include Georgian shot stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is believed to be coming in first as a replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher, who is expected to leave the club this season, and then an understudy to Alisson Becker who he will take over from in the coming seasons. The Reds also have Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo and Sporting CP’s Gonzalo Ignacio, who is believed to be Joe Gomez’s replacement thanks to the England international’s desire to leave Anfield (Liverpool Echo).
