EPL Players at EURO 2024 – Day 19
The round of 16 concluded last night, seeing Netherlands and Türkiye progress from matches against Romania and Austria, respectively, to set up a meeting with each other in the quarter-finals.. As part of our EPLNews EURO 2024 report, here is how Premier League players performed in these games.
Romania 0-3 Netherlands
Though the scoreline might suggest an easy victory, Netherlands had to really put in a shift in order to unlock a stubborn Romanian defence in Munich. The first goal came almost midway through the first half, when Cody Gakpo scored with a powerful shot at the near post.
This was the moment that triggered a clearer dominance by the Dutch, as they ended the game with an xG of 2.77 (Romania xG was 0.24) and 24 shots. Despite resolute defending, Romania would concede twice more in the second half, with substitute Donyell Malen scoring both.
Premier League players performed reasonably well in this one, with Cody Gakpo continuing his outstanding tournament form and winning the Man of the Match award, while Nathan Ake was the best player in the Dutch defence before his exit in the 69th minute.
