EPL Players at Copa America 2024 – Day 7
The focus was on group B on day 7 of the Copa America, with Ecuador overcoming Jamaica and Venezuela surprisingly beating Mexico. As part of our EPLNews Copa America report, here is how Premier League players involved in the tournament performed.
Ecuador 3-1 Jamaica
The Reggae Boyz can feel aggrieved by some of the refereeing decisions on show in their second loss out of as many games at this year’s Copa America. After falling behind to an own goal by Kasey Palmer in the first quarter of an hour, they also conceded a controversial penalty in first half injury time, which was scored by teenager Kendry Paez.
Jamaica did show plenty of fight after the break, halving the deficit through a Michail Antonio goal before a VAR decision in their favour was overturned and Alan Minda scored on the counter for Ecuador to put the game to bed.
Premier League players featuring in this game included Moises Caicedo for Ecuador, Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Ethan Pinnock for Jamaica, among others. In terms of performances, it was a mixed bag, as Michail Antonio scored the Caribbean nation’s only goal, but did not have a great game overall, while Wolves midfielder Dexter Lembikisa played a poor match.

Jamaica: Ethan Pinnock (Brentford) – 5.5; Dexter Lembikisa (Wolves) – 5; Bobby De Cordova-Reid (Fulham) – 6.5; Michail Antonio (West Ham) – 6.5;
Venezuela 1-0 Mexico
In a game thoroughly dominated by Mexico, Venezuela made the most of their few chances and came away with a narrow win thanks to a Salomon Rondon penalty in the second half.
Despite being awarded a penalty themselves in the closing stages, Orbelin Pineda failed to get Mexico onto the scoreboard and Venezuela held on to win a famous victory.
No Premier League players featured in this game, with Edson Alvarez spending the full 90 minutes on the bench.
