Burnley vs Nottingham Forest Report
Scorers: Cullen 72’; Wood 2’, 14’
Thanks to a 2-1 victory against Burnley at Turf Moor, Nottingham Forest have claimed back-to-back top-flight away wins for the first time since April 1995. This defeat means the Clarets failed to win more than two home games in a season for the first time in their history.
Early Goals Set the Tone
In what had been billed for weeks as a relegation decider, last weekend’s results rendered this clash a last day dead rubber. Burnley fell behind inside two minutes in typically catastrophic circumstances.
Anthony Elanga strolled to the byline and laid the ball on a plate for former Burnley man Chris Wood to tap home the opener from six yards.
Chris Wood’s Impactful Performance
Wood, who enjoyed his time at Turf Moor when he donned the claret shirt, was influential in doubling Forest’s lead. He inadvertently turned home Ryan Yates’ effort from the edge of the area.
Burnley needed to go all-out to at least give Forest a challenge.
Zeki Amdouni, a scorer in previous encounters, almost completed a personal treble against the Reds but fired well over the bar after Jacob Bruun Larsen found him unmarked six yards out with a cutback.
Second Half Struggles for Burnley
After halftime, Burnley focused on giving the outgoing Jack Cork and Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson a good send-off. Wood had another chance but skied an effort high over Arijanet Muric’s crossbar.
The one-way traffic continued in Forest’s favour, and but for two Muric saves to deny Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo, Forest would’ve been well out of sight.
Late Consolation Goal for Burnley
Vincent Kompany’s side halved the arrears 20 minutes from time when Josh Cullen’s effort took a wicked deflection and trickled into the bottom corner. However, it proved to be nothing more than a consolation for Burnley, who went down with a whimper.
Even a points deduction wasn’t enough to relegate Forest, who closed a regular league season with a win for the first time since 2018/19.
