Our Expert FPL Choices for the Final Gameweek
Finally, we are at the end of the line.
At this point, there is almost no tip that can help most managers. However, everyone wants to end the season with their head held high.
All outstanding games have been played and like most FPL managers, most actual Premier League managers want to give their fans something to be happy about on the last day of the season.
This means there could be interesting team selections, a good number of specific substitutions and high-quality performances. There is also an interesting golden boot race.
Below is how FPL managers can sign off on a high.
Gameweek 38 Analysis
First, we must remind you that the last matchday of every Premier League season is usually quite chaotic.
Last minute winners, raucous fans, physical battles, goal fests and many moments that are always talked about for weeks until the start of a new season are a staple of game week 38 every year.
The 2023/24 season is not going to be any different thanks to a number of battles that still need conclusion. Our best advice to managers is to avoid most of these battles if they do not involve teams and players that have ranked high on several key metrics (e.g., points, form) in the last few weeks.
Here are the fixtures for the day, all of which will be played on Sunday, May 19th, and will be kicking off at the same time.
And here is also where you can read our preview of matchday 38, focusing on all there still is to play for in the EPL.
Having already mentioned that many of the games could be dead ends, the following games should be considered for your gameweek 38 FPL differential picks.
Brentford vs Newcastle
Both teams have nothing much to play for but Newcastle United will want to get a win against the Bees.
Chelsea are in the UEFA Europa League spot while Manchester United are just behind them on goal difference. A win on the road on the last day could help them keep their UEFA Europa Conference League place which United are after.
This is where Alexander Isak (£8.4m) comes in. He did not yield much returns in double gameweek 37 but he remains a goal threat, especially with Brentford as his opponents.
Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford is also a great pick thanks to his recent form. And at £6.8m, he is a great pick to have.
Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa
These teams also have nothing to play for: Villa have secured their top four finish and UEFA Champions League place, while Palace are only looking to finish higher than 12th place. Only 2 points separate them and 10th-placed Brighton and Hove Albion.
Michael Olise (£5.7m) is our pick of the lot thanks to his impressive form in the last five games (3G, 2A). The 22-year-old has 10 goals in 18 league appearances and is showing signs of being a brilliant player under Oliver Glasner.
Villa will want to go all out, but it is safer to avoid any of their players as their objectives have already been achieved.
Best FPL Players for Week 38
Brennan Johnson (£5.8m) – Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur may have thrown their season, but it could get worse for them as Chelsea are hot on their heels in the race to finish 5th.
Luckily for Spurs, they face Sheffield United, who have made history as the worst team the Premier League has ever seen (at least in terms of goals conceded). This is why Brennan Johnson is one of our top two picks for gameweek 38.
Richarlison and Timo Werner are still out injured, which means he will be getting anywhere between 70 to 90 minutes against the Blades. The Welsh forward is not the best goalscorer, but he is one of the top creators in Ange Postecoglou’s team.
This also makes him a great differential pick option because of the likes of Son Heung-Min (£9.9m) on the team.
Our FPL expert analysis for gameweek 38 points to low ownership players as the best bet to finish the season strong. Johnson is owned by only 1.8 percent of all FPL managers despite having a 3.0 form rating and a threat index in the top 30 in the league.
He is a great buy especially because he is likely to not cost any points hit.
Joško Gvardiol (£5.1m) – Manchester City
One of the more expensive defenders in the league is Joško Gvardiol, who at £5.1m is still a great buy.
Since Manchester City’s loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, the Croatian defender has been a mainstay of Pep Guardiola’s starting XIs. Not only has he put in great defensive performances, but he has also contributed to as many goals as the other City defenders combined in the last five games for the reigning champions.
With four goals and two assists in his last six Premier League games for City, he has also amassed 66 points since gameweek 33, making him the most in-form player in the league.
He is not a low-ownership player, but his recent numbers make him one of our top two picks. This is because City face West Ham who they are expected to beat, and Gvardiol’s form is expected to be pivotal to the Cityzens retaining the title on Sunday.
