Brighton vs Liverpool Preview: Seagulls Welcome Champions To The Amex

Brighton vs Liverpool Preview

  • Draw
  • Over 2.5 goals

Brighton looked to be ending the season with a whimper after going six matches without a win in the Premier League (two draws and four defeats). However, a timely turnaround has seen Fabian Hürzeler’s side take seven points from their last three fixtures, including a crucial 2-0 victory over Wolves in their most recent outing. That result ended a ten-game wait for a clean sheet in the league and strengthened their grip on a top-half finish.

While a place in Europe still relies on other results, the Seagulls must focus on controlling their own fate. Victory here could secure an eighth-place finish, which might be enough for continental football should Palace fall short at Wembley.

Brighton’s form at the Amex Stadium gives cause for optimism. They’ve lost just once in their last seven home league matches (four wins, two draws) and have a respectable recent record against Liverpool on the south coast. The Seagulls are unbeaten in three of their last four Premier League home games against the Reds (two wins, one draw), underlining their credentials as tough hosts.

Liverpool Focused on Finishing Strong Despite Title Secured

Liverpool wrapped up the Premier League title weeks ago, but since then, their performances have shown signs of tapering off. A 3-1 defeat to Chelsea and a 2-2 home draw with Arsenal—after holding a 2-0 lead—highlight that intensity levels may have dropped slightly with the trophy already secured.

That said, pride remains a motivating factor. The Reds will want to avoid ending their travels on a sour note, especially with a proud away record on the line. A loss here would mark their first back-to-back away defeats in the Premier League since April 2023, a minor blemish on an otherwise excellent campaign.

Liverpool have the added incentive of chasing history. A goal at the Amex would mean the Merseyside club have scored in every away league game in a single top-flight season for the first time in their storied history. Manager Arne Slot, who has already guided his team to the title in his debut season, may also use this fixture to give fringe players an opportunity, particularly after the squad was seen enjoying a celebratory trip to the UAE earlier in the week.

Key Players to Watch

For Brighton, the spotlight may once again fall on Danny Welbeck, who has proven a reliable performer in big games.

The experienced forward has directly contributed to four goals in his last five Premier League appearances against Liverpool (two goals and two assists). With European qualification potentially at stake, Welbeck’s ability to find space and link up play could be vital.

On the other side, all eyes will be on Mohamed Salah, who stands on the cusp of making more history. The Egyptian winger could make his 300th Premier League appearance in this fixture, and he enters the match having scored 16 away goals this season.

That tally puts him just one goal shy of breaking the record for most away goals in a single Premier League campaign. Having netted in each of his last three visits to the Amex, Salah will be confident of etching his name into another record book.

Head-to-Head and Tactical Notes

While Liverpool have traditionally dominated this fixture, Brighton’s growing status in the Premier League has made them a much trickier opponent in recent years. The Seagulls have consistently tested top sides with their high-pressing style and ability to transition quickly from defence to attack. That could be a useful weapon against a Liverpool team potentially rotating heavily.

Defensively, Brighton have looked more assured in recent matches, with captain Lewis Dunk marshalling the back line effectively. However, their tendency to leave space in behind may be something Liverpool’s speedy forwards, including Salah and possibly Diogo Jota or Darwin Núñez, will look to exploit.

Prediction

This match has the potential to be a high-scoring, open affair, with both sides having little to lose and plenty to gain. Brighton are motivated by the prospect of European football, while Liverpool will want to finish strongly and help Salah chase his individual milestone.

Prediction: Brighton 2-2 Liverpool

Expect goals at both ends, with Brighton pushing for victory but Liverpool’s quality in attack likely earning them a share of the spoils.
