Wolverhampton Wanderers took a huge step toward Premier League survival with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over basement side Southampton at St Mary’s.

The win extends Wolves’ cushion over the relegation zone to nine points, while the Saints remain rooted to the foot of the table, suffering their fifth consecutive league defeat.

Southampton Start Brightly but Fall Behind Again

With relegation all but confirmed, Southampton played with freedom early on, showing attacking intent in search of an elusive home victory.

Their best chance of the opening exchanges came from Yukinari Sugawara, who delivered a dangerous low cross from the right, aiming for Kamaldeen Sulemana, only for Wolves’ defence to clear the danger.

Despite their promising start, the Saints once again found themselves trailing, a situation all too familiar this season.

Jørgen Strand Larsen capitalised on Wolves’ first real attacking move, rising unchallenged to meet Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s whipped cross and power a header past Aaron Ramsdale.

That goal appeared to knock the fight out of Southampton, who struggled to recover before the half-time whistle, aware that they had claimed just one Premier League point from losing positions this season.

Strand Larsen Strikes Again as Wolves Take Control

Without the suspended Matheus Cunha, Wolves needed other attacking outlets to step up, and Strand Larsen did just that.

The Norwegian doubled his tally shortly after the restart, this time collecting a pass from Bellegarde on the edge of the box before drilling a low strike beyond Ramsdale.

Southampton, determined not to go down without a fight, responded with a direct run from Sugawara, forcing José Sá into an acrobatic save.

However, Wolves almost put the game beyond reach moments later when João Gomes found space inside the area but dragged his shot narrowly wide.

Onuachu Pulls One Back But Saints Fall Short

Wolves’ missed opportunity gave Southampton a glimmer of hope, and with 15 minutes remaining, they halved the deficit. Tyler Dibling’s shot struck the far post and rebounded perfectly into the path of Paul Onuachu, who made no mistake in tapping home.

Despite a late push from the hosts, an equaliser never materialised, condemning Southampton to another painful defeat.

The Saints have now won just two of their last 30 home league matches, while Derby County’s infamous record-low points tally of 11 remains within reach as the season draws to a dismal close.

Wolves Take a Huge Step Toward Safety

For Wolves, this victory could prove vital in their survival bid. While they remain 17th, their lead over 18th-placed Ipswich Town—who lost to Nottingham Forest—grows wider.

With just a handful of games left, Wolves now have breathing room as they aim to secure another season in the top flight.
