Tottenham vs Manchester United  Europa League Final Report

Scorers: Johnson 42’

Tottenham Hotspur lifted their first piece of silverware in 17 years by edging Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final at San Mamés. The triumph not only brought an end to their trophy drought but also secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, salvaging what had been an otherwise forgettable domestic campaign.

First Half – Johnson Forces the Breakthrough

With both clubs desperate for continental redemption, the opening exchanges were understandably cagey. Tottenham offered the first real threat as Brennan Johnson’s burst down the right found Pape Matar Sarr, but Harry Maguire did well to block the midfielder’s effort. United responded moments later when Amad Diallo flashed a low drive across goal after Spurs failed to clear a corner.

The breakthrough came three minutes before HT in scrappy fashion. Sarr whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, Johnson attacked the near post, and Luke Shaw inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net. It was a fortunate but timely opener in a match sorely lacking quality.

Second Half – Spurs Cling On, United Falter

United have developed a worrying habit of conceding first — for the 31st time this season — and they again found themselves chasing the game. Rasmus Højlund headed over from an Amad cross, while Guglielmo Vicario nearly gifted the Red Devils an equaliser when he flapped at a Fernandes delivery, only for Micky van de Ven to execute a heroic goal-line clearance.

Fernandes missed a golden chance to level proceedings with a diving header, and although substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee injected late energy into United’s play, Spurs remained resolute. Vicario made a sharp stop from Garnacho’s effort, sealing his clean sheet and Tottenham’s triumph.

Conclusion – European Success at Last for Spurs

Ange Postecoglou celebrated his 100th game in charge with a milestone moment in Spurs’ history. They registered their 150th European win and lifted a major trophy for the first time since 2008 — a feat that eluded more celebrated squads under Mauricio Pochettino.

For Manchester United, the defeat marked a bitter end to their Europa League campaign and another chapter in a dismal season, with serious questions now looming over Ruben Amorim and his squad’s direction heading into the summer.
