Chelsea vs Liverpool Report
Scorers: Fernandez 3’, Quansah (OG) 56’, Palmer 90+6’ (P); van Dijk 85’
Chelsea earned a massive three points in their pursuit of UEFA Champions League football by defeating newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Enzo Fernández, an own goal via Jarrell Quansah, and a late Cole Palmer penalty handed Enzo Maresca’s side a deserved win and extended their excellent recent form to just one loss in nine league outings.
First Half – Chelsea’s Hunger Shows
With Liverpool making six changes following last weekend’s title-clinching win over Tottenham, the difference in motivation was evident from the outset. Chelsea came flying out of the blocks and needed just three minutes to open the scoring. A slick attacking move saw Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto combine to release Enzo Fernández, who calmly slotted home to give the hosts an early advantage.
The Blues continued to dominate in the early stages, with Noni Madueke opting to shoot rather than pass to Fernández during another dangerous attack. Liverpool responded with a spell of possession, but they struggled to create anything of note, as Robert Sánchez remained largely untested.
Second Half – Blues Capitalise on Luck
Chelsea resumed on the front foot after the break, and Alisson Becker was called into action to deny Nicolas Jackson. Their second goal came in bizarre fashion, with Palmer beating Tsimikas down the flank and driving a low cross into the box. Virgil van Dijk’s attempted clearance cannoned off Jarrell Quansah and into the Liverpool net, handing Chelsea a two-goal cushion.
That moment finally woke Liverpool up. Van Dijk and substitutes Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah all spurned decent headed chances to halve the deficit. Chelsea had the opportunity to kill the game as Jadon Sancho’s effort was saved and Palmer struck the post, and they were nearly punished when Van Dijk converted from a corner to make it 2-1.
Palmer’s Penalty Seals It
With the home crowd growing increasingly anxious, a clumsy stoppage-time foul from Quansah on Moisés Caicedo gave Chelsea the chance to wrap up the win from the penalty spot. Palmer stepped up and sent Alisson the wrong way, scoring his first goal since January to settle the nerves and secure the result.
Key Stats
- Enzo Fernández scored his fourth league goal of the season.
- Chelsea have now lost just once in their last nine Premier League games.
- Liverpool have now conceded six goals in their last two away league matches.

Chelsea’s victory moves them three points clear of Nottingham Forest in the top-five race, although they’ve played a game more. Liverpool, meanwhile, will be unfazed by the defeat with the title already secured, but will want to finish strong before their upcoming celebratory parade.
