West Ham vs Tottenham Preview
- Draw or Spurs win
- Both teams to score
Survival secured, pride at stake
With Premier League safety confirmed, both West Ham and Tottenham enter this Sunday afternoon clash aiming to avoid finishing as the worst-performing team to survive the drop.
Separated by just one point in 17th and 16th respectively ahead of the weekend, this contest is set to carry plenty of pride and pressure despite the lack of relegation danger.
Potter’s pain grows with defensive woes
Graham Potter’s West Ham side surrendered a late lead to lose 3-2 at Brighton last weekend, extending their winless league run to seven matches (D3, L4). The normally reserved Potter admitted he was “in too much pain to talk about positives” post-match, as the Hammers conceded multiple goals for the third time in four games.
Their inability to keep clean sheets has plagued their form, with a 1-1 draw against already-relegated Southampton in their last home match showing just how brittle they are defensively. Still, they’ll take confidence from avoiding defeat in their last four home league meetings with Spurs (W2, D2).
Spurs in damage control mode
Tottenham were dealt another heavy blow last weekend with a 5-1 defeat to newly crowned champions Liverpool, tying their record for most losses in a Premier League campaign (19). Although they responded with a 3-1 home win against Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, speculation continues to swirl around Ange Postecoglou’s future at the helm.
Away form has been particularly concerning, with Spurs losing four consecutive Premier League road games for the first time since 2019. However, they remain unbeaten in away league games against sides currently below them in the table, which offers a sliver of optimism ahead of their trip to East London.
Players to watch
Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)
The winger has scored in back-to-back home games, netting after half-time on both occasions.
All ten of his club goals this season have come after the 40th minute.
Dominic Solanke (Tottenham)
Solanke’s Europa League penalty on Thursday was the eighth of his last 13 goals to come after the break, underlining his habit of late contributions.
