Brighton vs Newcastle Preview
- Both teams to score
- Over 2.5 goals
Momentum shift for Brighton
Brighton rekindled their European qualification hopes with a dramatic 3-2 victory over West Ham last weekend, scoring twice after the 85th minute to snap a five-match winless run (D2, L3). With four league matches remaining, the Seagulls are still in the mix for a top-eight finish and could use that comeback as a springboard to finish strong.
Despite facing top-five challengers, Brighton may relish the visit of Newcastle. They’ve already beaten the Magpies twice this season in league and cup action and now have the chance to beat the same opponent three times in a single campaign for the first time since 2009/10, when they achieved the feat against Wycombe Wanderers.
Newcastle chasing a historic finish
Newcastle head south full of confidence after a routine 3-0 win over Ipswich, making it six wins from their last seven games in all competitions (L1). Manager Eddie Howe’s return to the touchline after illness coincided with a sharp performance, and with the Magpies firmly placed inside the top three heading into the weekend, a Champions League berth is now within reach.
With 19 league wins already under their belt, Newcastle are eyeing a 20th top-flight victory in a single season for the first time since 2002/03, when Sir Bobby Robson’s side finished third. Replicating that landmark would be another step forward in a season of genuine progress for the Toon Army.
Players to watch
Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton)
Has scored in his last two Premier League appearances and will look to extend his scoring streak to three for the first time in the competition.
Alexander Isak (Newcastle)
His 22 league goals this season make him the most prolific Newcastle striker since Alan Shearer in 2003/04.
However, he’s without an away league goal since January, which adds intrigue to his chances here.
Hot stat
Only Arsenal (18) have led more Premier League games at half-time this season than Newcastle (HT: W17, D7, L10).
