How Liverpool Can Clinch the Premier League Title on Sunday

Liverpool are on the verge of being crowned Premier League champions for only the second time in the club’s illustrious history. The pivotal moment could arrive this Sunday, in front of their home supporters, as they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

A simple result would suffice—Liverpool only need to draw against Spurs on Sunday to seal their 20th top-flight league title.

Why the Title Could Be Secured on Sunday

If Liverpool manage to secure a draw against Tottenham, they would increase their points tally to 80, with just four fixtures remaining in the 2024/25 campaign.

Their nearest title rivals, Arsenal, currently sit on 67 points following a home draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. With just four matches left to play, the Gunners have a maximum of 12 points available, meaning they can only reach a potential total of 79 points.

This mathematical reality sets the stage for Liverpool to clinch the Premier League title this weekend—provided they avoid defeat against Tottenham.

A History That Favours the Reds

Liverpool’s impressive recent record against Tottenham Hotspur provides further optimism for their fans. Historically, the Reds have performed dominantly at home against the north London club.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 15 home encounters with Spurs across all competitions, winning an impressive 11 of those fixtures. Even more striking, they have won the last three meetings at Anfield, scoring four goals on each occasion.

In the Premier League as a whole—home and away included—Tottenham have only won twice in their last 24 league meetings with Liverpool. The Merseyside club have continually found ways to get the better of Spurs, making Sunday’s challenge seem far from daunting.

Adding to that, Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the last 18 Premier League clashes between the two sides. This inability to shut out Liverpool’s attack has been a major factor in the Reds’ dominance during recent years.

With these trends in mind, confidence is high that Arne Slot’s side will get the result they need to confirm their position at the summit of English football once again.

What If Liverpool Lose to Spurs?

While all eyes are on Anfield this weekend, it is worth noting the alternative scenarios should the result not go Liverpool’s way.

If Tottenham were to win against Liverpool on Sunday, then the title race would be temporarily prolonged. In that situation, Liverpool would not be able to celebrate just yet and would need to wait until the following weekend for another opportunity.

In this case, Arsenal must beat Bournemouth in their own fixture next Saturday to keep their faint title hopes alive and delay Liverpool’s celebrations.

If Arsenal do pick up three points against Bournemouth, then Liverpool would still be in control of their destiny. All they would need the following weekend is a draw in their away fixture against Chelsea to clinch the Premier League title, regardless of Arsenal’s results thereafter.

Anfield Awaits a Historic Moment

Sunday promises to be a momentous occasion at Anfield, with the stadium potentially witnessing a title-winning celebration for the second time in the Premier League era, but this time with fans in the stands, unlike their celebrations in 2020.

The atmosphere is expected to be electric as fans prepare for what could be a historic afternoon. Liverpool supporters have waited with anticipation throughout the season, and now they are on the brink of seeing their side lift the coveted trophy once more.

Should the Reds avoid defeat, they will officially add a 20th top-flight title to their honours list—drawing level with Manchester United in terms of overall league championships. That milestone will further cement Liverpool’s status as one of English football’s most storied clubs.

The Final Push

With just four matches left after this weekend, the chance to seal the title early offers a major incentive for Slot’s squad. The ability to rest key players, avoid unnecessary injuries, and focus on planning and building for the next season becomes significantly easier once the league is secured.

All eyes now turn to Sunday’s clash at Anfield. A draw will do the job. A win would be even sweeter. For Liverpool, the equation is simple: don’t lose, and the Premier League title is yours.

Conclusion

Liverpool are within touching distance of Premier League glory. With a superior points tally and a dominant record against their upcoming opponents, all signs point towards a potential celebration on Sunday. Should they draw with Tottenham Hotspur, the title will be theirs—no matter what Arsenal do from here on. But even in the event of a rare defeat, the Reds still remain in full control of their destiny. Anfield is ready. Now, it’s time for Liverpool to finish the job.
