Last-ditch survival hopes for Leicester

After nine straight defeats and a painful eight-match goalless run in the Premier League, Leicester City finally showed some fight in their 2-2 draw with Brighton last time out. Coming from behind twice, it was a rare moment of resilience from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side. Yet with relegation potentially being mathematically confirmed before kick-off depending on earlier results, the Foxes might find themselves playing for pride alone.

Even if they enter this match still mathematically alive, a win is essential to keep their faint survival hopes alive. However, they return to the King Power Stadium having set an unwanted top-flight record of eight successive home league defeats without scoring. A ninth such blank would see them join just two other clubs in English football history in failing to score in nine consecutive home league matches.

Liverpool closing in on Premier League glory

On the other side of the pitch, Liverpool could be crowned champions on Easter Sunday – if they beat Leicester and Arsenal lose to Ipswich earlier in the day. Whether it’s this weekend or next, the Reds seem destined to lift a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title under new boss Arne Slot, who could cap off a dream debut season at Anfield.

The recent announcement of new contracts for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk has lifted spirits even further on Merseyside, though Slot’s men must tighten up defensively after a shock 3-2 defeat to Fulham in their last away outing. A return to form against a struggling Leicester side would be fitting, particularly as Liverpool have won 12 of the last 15 Premier League meetings between the two sides.

History and form on Liverpool’s side

Liverpool fans can look to history for further reassurance. The Reds have a strong record in Easter Sunday fixtures, winning seven of their last ten such league games (D1, L2). They also boast a formidable attacking record away from home recently, having scored exactly two goals in each of their last six Premier League away matches – a pattern they’ll be confident of continuing against the league’s leakiest defence.

Players to watch

Stephy Mavididi (Leicester)

A bright spark in an otherwise dire run, Mavididi ended the Foxes’ scoring drought last weekend.

History suggests he’s a lucky charm too, with his side avoiding defeat in each of the last 17 home matches he has scored in (W15, D2).

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

The Egyptian is eyeing a unique record here: scoring in all six Premier League matches against promoted clubs in a single season.

He’ll be eager to end a three-match league goal drought, especially after signing his new deal.

Hot stat

Liverpool have scored exactly twice in each of their last six Premier League away games – consistency that could be key in securing the title.
