Aaron Ramsdale Handed £25m Manchester United Transfer Boost Amid Arsenal Reunion Hints
The former Arsenal goalkeeper has emerged as a surprise target for Manchester United this summer. An Aaron Ramsdale transfer to Old Trafford this summer could see him replace Andre Onana as the Red Devils’ first-choice goalkeeper.
Ramsdale’s Arsenal Exit and Southampton Move
Ramsdale lost his place in the starting XI at Arsenal last season following the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford. Under Mikel Arteta, Raya was favoured throughout the campaign. When the Spaniard’s move was made permanent this summer, Ramsdale opted to leave the Emirates.
In search of regular first-team football, the English goalkeeper completed a £25 million transfer to Southampton at the end of August.
Manchester United Monitoring Ramsdale
According to various sources from England, Manchester United have been keeping a close eye on Ramsdale. The report claims the club considers him a solid signing option for prospective new manager Ruben Amorim.
Ramsdale has a £25 million release clause in his contract, which has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, including United.
Andre Onana Under Fire
Interest in Ramsdale has grown in part due to ongoing concerns surrounding current United goalkeeper Andre Onana. The former Inter Milan shot-stopper has been criticised for a series of high-profile mistakes this season.
Most recently, Onana was blamed for both goals in United’s 2-2 draw against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
McCoist and Stelling Support Ramsdale Move
Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist and ex-Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling have weighed in on the reports linking Ramsdale with a move to Old Trafford.
Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist said: “I don’t think it’d be daft at all. I don’t fancy Onana to be honest with you, I’m not sure he’s of the class Manchester United need as a goalkeeper moving forward. The squad’s needing a dramatic overhaul and that wouldn’t be the daftest move.”
Stelling also praised Ramsdale’s pedigree and top-flight experience: “Ramsdale’s played at the top level. He’s played for England, he’s played for Arsenal, and he’s not going to want to play in the Championship with Southampton.” To which McCoist responded: “No, that’s for sure. I’d be staggered if he starts next year at Southampton. I don’t think he’ll be there next season in the Championship.”
Financial Impact of Southampton’s Relegation
Southampton’s relegation back to the Championship could have financial implications for Arsenal. The Gunners were set to receive a £1 million windfall as part of the deal that took Ramsdale to St Mary’s Stadium.
However, with the Saints now dropping out of the Premier League, that clause will not be activated, meaning Arsenal will miss out on the extra payment.
Arsenal Reunion Speculation
Despite his departure, Ramsdale remains connected to his former Arsenal teammates. Following Southampton’s recent loss to Tottenham Hotspur, the 26-year-old posted an emotional message on Instagram.
The post was liked by several Arsenal players, suggesting they are still following his career closely. This support has sparked suggestions that a return to the Emirates could be possible in the future.
Next Step for Ramsdale?
With Ramsdale’s talent widely acknowledged and his £25 million release clause now public knowledge, the speculation around his next move continues to build. Manchester United’s interest appears serious, particularly given Onana’s ongoing struggles and the need for a dependable figure in goal.
While a return to Arsenal has been floated by some, the immediate opportunity at Old Trafford might prove more appealing—especially with European football and top-flight action on offer.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on where Ramsdale ends up next.
