Newcastle vs Manchester United Report

Scorers: Tonali 24’, Barnes 49’, 64’, Bruno Guimaraes 77’; Garnacho 37’

Newcastle United produced a stunning performance at St James’ Park to secure a resounding 4-1 victory over a beleaguered Manchester United side, climbing to fourth in the Premier League and completing their first league double over the Red Devils since the 1930/31 season.

Ruthless Magpies Soar Into Top Four

Eddie Howe’s men extended their winning run to six matches in all competitions and further underlined their Champions League credentials with a clinical display in front of a raucous home crowd. Despite an early scare when Joelinton’s goal was ruled out for offside, the Magpies dominated the first half, with Sandro Tonali opening the scoring in the 24th minute.

The goal was a thing of beauty, with Kieran Trippier picking out Alexander Isak, who delicately lofted the ball into Tonali’s path. The Italian midfielder made no mistake, rifling a superb first-time strike past Altay Bayındır, who was making his Premier League debut in place of the under-fire André Onana.

Tonali and Isak both went close to adding a second, but it was Manchester United who struck next against the run of play. Diogo Dalot’s surging run set up Alejandro Garnacho, who finished clinically to restore parity before half-time.

Barnes and Guimarães Seal the Rout

Newcastle wasted no time regaining their lead after the interval. Tino Livramento’s dangerous cross was squared by Jacob Murphy to substitute Harvey Barnes, who made no mistake from close range to restore the hosts’ advantage.

Manchester United’s misery was compounded when Joshua Zirkzee limped off with a hamstring injury, forcing Ruben Amorim into a triple substitution. But the changes had little impact as Barnes grabbed his second of the game just moments later. Outmuscling Noussair Mazraoui, he powered into the box and fired an unstoppable shot into the net – becoming just the second Magpies player after Alan Shearer to net a Premier League brace against Manchester United.

Things went from bad to worse for Amorim’s side when Bayındır, like Onana before him, made a costly error. His poor clearance went straight to Joelinton, who calmly nodded the ball into the path of Bruno Guimarães to add a fourth and complete the rout.

United’s Worst-Ever Premier League Campaign Confirmed

This result confirms that Manchester United will finish the season with their lowest-ever Premier League points tally, regardless of their results in the remaining six matches. Even if Amorim’s men win all their remaining fixtures, they will finish on just 56 points – two short of the 58-point total recorded in the 2021/22 campaign.

For Newcastle, this season continues to be a historic one. Back-to-back league wins over the Red Devils for the first time in nearly a century and a current run of imperious form has them in prime position to return to UEFA Champions League football next term.
