Manchester City vs Leicester Report
Scorers: Grealish 2’, Marmoush 29’
Manchester City recorded their 13th straight Premier League victory against newly-promoted sides with a comfortable 2-0 win over Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Early goals from Jack Grealish and Omar Marmoush sealed the result, lifting Pep Guardiola’s side back into the top four, while the Foxes’ seventh straight defeat without scoring leaves them firmly rooted in the relegation zone.
Grealish Ends Goal Drought as City Strike Early
Fresh off their FA Cup win over Bournemouth, City wasted no time asserting dominance. Just two minutes in, Jérémy Doku won possession in midfield and released Savinho, whose low cross found Jack Grealish in space.
The England winger coolly slotted into the bottom corner to open the scoring—his first Premier League goal since December 2023.
Leicester had a brief window of opportunity to equalise, when Bilal El Khannouss found space at the edge of the box, but he dragged his shot wide in what turned out to be the visitors’ only attempt of the match.
Marmoush Doubles Lead After Hermansen Error
City capitalised on Leicester’s wastefulness just before the half-hour mark. Omar Marmoush, standing in for the injured Erling Haaland, took advantage of a mishandled ball by Mads Hermansen, smashing a shot off the underside of the bar and in.
It marked Marmoush’s fifth first-half league goal since his move from Eintracht Frankfurt, highlighting his growing importance in City’s attack.
Hermansen somewhat redeemed himself before the break, denying Savinho from close range to keep the scoreline respectable at 2-0.
City Cruise to Victory but Waste Chances to Extend Lead
The second half offered more of the same in terms of City’s possession dominance, though their cutting edge began to fade. Marmoush came closest to scoring again just before the hour after a flowing passing sequence, but lifted his shot over the bar.
Despite enjoying near-total control, City managed just one shot on target in the second half, failing to truly threaten a third goal. However, their early work was more than enough to secure all three points and a much-needed return to winning ways in the league.
What It Means
For Manchester City, the result ends a run of two league games without a win and moves them into the top four, reigniting their push for Champions League qualification.
There was further cause for celebration as Oscar Bobb made his return from injury, offering Guardiola more attacking depth for the crucial run-in.
For Leicester, the outlook is bleak. They have now lost seven consecutive top-flight matches without scoring, becoming only the fourth side in English top-flight history to do so.
Their stay in the Premier League appears increasingly doomed, with survival looking highly unlikely unless there’s a dramatic turnaround.
