Bournemouth vs Wolves Report

Scorer: Cunha 36’

Red Card: Zabarnyi 31’

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a crucial 1-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium, dealing a blow to Bournemouth’s European ambitions while boosting their own fight against relegation.

Despite the Cherries’ impressive form heading into the clash, a red card for Illia Zabarnyi and a Matheus Cunha strike proved decisive as Wolves picked up their fourth Premier League win under Vítor Pereira.

Early Wolves Pressure and Zabarnyi’s Red Card

Bournemouth had lost just once in their previous 13 league games, but Wolves showed early intent, proving they were not here to roll over.

The visitors came close to taking the lead in the opening exchanges, with Nélson Semedo driving into the box and striking the post. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde nearly capitalised on the rebound, but Kepa Arrizabalaga reacted superbly to deny his powerful effort.

Wolves continued to push forward, forcing Kepa into another strong save from Matheus Cunha’s long-range shot.

Then, the game took a decisive turn in the 30th minute when Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi mistimed a challenge. After a VAR review, the Ukrainian was shown a straight red card, leaving the Cherries with 10 men.

Wolves capitalised on their numerical advantage almost immediately. Minutes after Zabarnyi’s dismissal, Bournemouth’s defence switched off, allowing Cunha to ghost into the box unmarked and slot home from eight yards out, giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Wolves Manage the Game as Bournemouth Struggle

Despite trailing, Bournemouth tried to push forward in search of an equaliser. However, Wolves maintained their defensive shape and controlled possession, making it difficult for the home side to break through.

Wolves had a golden opportunity to put the game beyond doubt early in the second half, but Marshall Munetsi missed a simple finish from close range.

That let-off gave Bournemouth some hope, but the Cherries struggled to create meaningful chances, uncharacteristically lacking the attacking fluency that has been their strength this season.

Despite late efforts from the hosts, Wolves remained resilient, extending their unbeaten Premier League run at the Vitality Stadium to five matches.

What This Means for Both Teams

  • Wolverhampton Wanderers: This crucial victory moves Wolves five points clear of the relegation zone, giving them renewed confidence in their fight for survival under Vítor Pereira. Their disciplined performance and defensive solidity will be encouraging signs as they look to build momentum.
  • AFC Bournemouth: The Cherries suffered a rare off-day, losing consecutive home league matches for the first time since October 2023. However, their European push remains on track despite this setback. Andoni Iraola’s men will need to bounce back quickly to keep their top-seven ambitions alive.

Final Thoughts

Wolves took full advantage of Bournemouth’s defensive lapse and red card to secure a vital three points. Pereira’s side showed resilience and composure, keeping the hosts at bay with a disciplined defensive display.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, must regroup after a frustrating afternoon where they struggled to impose themselves despite their recent strong form.

With Wolves now breathing a little easier above the drop zone and Bournemouth still firmly in the European race, both teams have plenty to play for as the season heads into its decisive stage.
