Best Manchester City Players of the Premier League Era

We are back with another instalment of our Premier League legends series and today we’re having a look at the best Manchester City players to grace England’s top echelon.

After analysing Liverpool’s creme-de-la-creme, we also had a look at Manchester United’s top legends, the top players of Arsenal in the EPL era, as well as Chelsea’s best of the best.

As we all know, Manchester City Football Club has undergone a remarkable transformation, especially over the last decade and a half. From mid-table obscurity to becoming a dominant force in English football, this evolution has been propelled by exceptional talents who have donned the sky-blue jersey.

So which City players make our list? Read on to find out!

Sergio Agüero

Agüero’s name is synonymous with goal-scoring excellence at Manchester City. Joining from Atlético Madrid in 2011, Agüero quickly established himself as a lethal striker. Over a decade-long tenure, he became the club’s all-time leading scorer, netting 184 Premier League goals in 275 appearances.

His most iconic moment came in the 2011-2012 season finale against Queens Park Rangers, where his stoppage-time goal secured City’s first Premier League title, a moment etched in football history. Beyond this unforgettable goal, Agüero consistently delivered, achieving multiple Premier League titles and earning the Golden Boot in the 2014-2015 season.

His agility, clinical finishing, and knack for crucial goals have solidified his legacy as one of the Premier League’s greatest strikers.

David Silva

Arriving from Valencia in 2010, David Silva brought creativity and finesse to Manchester City’s midfield. Over 309 Premier League appearances, Silva scored 60 goals and provided 93 assists, orchestrating play with his vision and technical prowess.

His ability to navigate tight spaces and deliver precise passes made him indispensable, earning him the nickname “El Mago” (The Magician). Silva’s influence was pivotal in City’s four Premier League titles during his tenure. His consistent performances and leadership on the pitch have left an indelible mark, and he is widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders to grace the Premier League.

Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany’s arrival from Hamburg in 2008 marked the beginning of a new era for Manchester City. As a central defender, Kompany’s leadership and defensive acumen were unparalleled. Making 265 Premier League appearances, he was the backbone of City’s defence, contributing not only with his defensive skills but also with crucial goals.

Notably, his long-range strike against Leicester City in the 2018-2019 season was instrumental in securing the title. Under his captaincy, City clinched four Premier League titles. Kompany’s commitment, resilience, and leadership have enshrined him as a club legend and one of the Premier League’s most respected figures.

Kevin De Bruyne

Since joining Manchester City from VfL Wolfsburg in 2015, Kevin De Bruyne has been the creative engine of the team. In 277 Premier League appearances, he has scored 70 goals and provided 118 assists, showcasing his exceptional vision and passing ability.

De Bruyne’s versatility allows him to influence the game from various midfield positions, and his knack for delivering in crucial moments has been vital to City’s success. His performances have earned him multiple individual accolades, including the PFA Players’ Player of the Year. De Bruyne’s blend of technical skill, intelligence, and consistency continues to drive Manchester City’s dominance in English football.

Yaya Touré

Yaya Touré’s signing from Barcelona in 2010 added power and dynamism to Manchester City’s midfield. Over 230 Premier League appearances, Touré scored 62 goals, many of which were pivotal in key matches. His remarkable 20-goal haul in the 2013-2014 season was instrumental in securing the league title.

Touré’s ability to drive forward with the ball, combined with his physical presence and technical skill, made him a unique midfield powerhouse. His contributions were crucial in City’s rise to prominence, and he is remembered as one of the most influential midfielders in the club’s history.

Conclusion

These five players have not only contributed to Manchester City’s trophy-laden years but have also set high standards of excellence, leaving lasting legacies that continue to inspire future generations at the Etihad Stadium.
