Liverpool vs Wolves Report

Scorers: Diaz 15’, Salah 37’ (P); Cunha 67’

Liverpool took another step towards Premier League glory with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, securing their 16th win in the last 17 head-to-head meetings between the sides.

Goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds a crucial three points, despite a late Matheus Cunha strike making for a nervy finish.

Liverpool Start Strong and Take First-Half Control

With a healthy cushion at the top of the table, Liverpool had some margin for error, but Arne Slot’s men showed their intent early on.

They nearly opened the scoring inside 10 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson combined to set up former Wolves forward Diogo Jota, whose volley flashed just wide.

It didn’t take long for Liverpool to break the deadlock, albeit in fortunate circumstances. A miscued clearance from Toti Gomes landed perfectly for Díaz, who bundled the ball into the net with his midriff to give the Reds a deserved lead.

Díaz continued to be a constant menace for the Wolves defence, setting up Jota in the area, only for a sensational last-ditch block from Emmanuel Agbadou to deny him.

The pressure kept mounting, and just before the break, Liverpool were awarded a penalty after José Sá brought down Díaz in the box. Salah stepped up and coolly converted from the spot, doubling the hosts’ lead.

Wolves struggled to make an impact but almost pulled one back before half-time when Matheus Cunha’s free-kick curled just inches wide.

Wolves Fight Back After VAR Drama

The visitors had a golden opportunity to halve the deficit early in the second half when Marshall Munetsi raced clear on goal, but Alisson produced a brilliant save to keep Liverpool’s lead intact.

Moments later, Liverpool thought they had sealed the win when Alexander-Arnold’s pinpoint pass found Salah, who slotted home, but the offside flag ruled the goal out.

Then came a moment of controversy. Simon Hooper awarded Liverpool a second penalty after Agbadou’s wild swing caught Jota inside the box. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, the referee overturned his decision, giving Wolves a lifeline.

That proved to be a turning point as Wolves capitalised on their reprieve, with Cunha bending a stunning strike past Alisson to pull one back in front of the Kop.

Liverpool’s second-half performance was far from convincing, with the hosts looking uneasy on their narrow lead.

Liverpool Hold On for Vital Three Points

Despite Wolves’ late resurgence, Liverpool held firm to see out the victory, re-establishing their seven-point lead at the top of the table. The win wasn’t as comfortable as it might have been, but it reinforced the Reds’ determination as they continue their title push.

For Wolves, the defeat was expected, but their spirited second-half display will give them confidence as they continue their fight to stay above the relegation zone.

What This Means for Both Teams

  • Liverpool: Another crucial win keeps the Reds in firm control of the title race. Despite a shaky second-half display, their ability to grind out results remains a key factor in their push for silverware.
  • Wolves: While they remain just above the drop zone, Wolves can take positives from their performance. A strong response in the second half shows they have the resilience needed to fight for survival.

Final Thoughts

Liverpool showed both their attacking brilliance and defensive vulnerability in a game that should have been wrapped up earlier. While Wolves nearly snatched an unlikely point, the Reds’ ability to secure victory despite second-half struggles underlines their title credentials.

With the business end of the season approaching, Liverpool must maintain their composure in tighter matches like this. For Wolves, the focus now shifts to securing enough points to stay clear of the bottom three.
