Football Transfer News: Ferguson, Tel, Chelsea and More
With only a few hours of the January transfer window left, here are the latest updates from EPLNews.
Tottenham Hotspur Pull Out of Axel Disasi Pursuit
Tottenham Hotspur have opted against signing Chelsea defender Axel Disasi on transfer deadline day, according to reports from Sky Sports. The club also failed in their attempt to secure Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
Spurs have endured a season plagued by defensive injuries, with Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin currently sidelined without clear return dates. While Chelsea’s Disasi was a potential target, Sky Sports reports that Tottenham have put that interest on hold. Meanwhile, Aston Villa, originally in contention for Disasi’s signature, have withdrawn from discussions, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
Romano had earlier reported that Chelsea and Spurs had agreed on a loan deal, but the move hinged on Disasi’s approval. His reluctance to join, possibly influenced by Tottenham’s position in the lower half of the Premier League table, ultimately ended the talks.
Liverpool Youngster Jayden Danns Joins Sunderland on Loan
Liverpool’s promising teenage striker Jayden Danns is set to join Championship side Sunderland on loan, according to multiple reports.
The 19-year-old made an impression in Liverpool’s first team, featuring under Jurgen Klopp during an injury crisis in early 2024. After recovering from a pre-season injury, he has continued to develop under new head coach Arne Slot.
As per Sky Sports, Danns has travelled to the North East to undergo a medical before finalising a loan move for the rest of the season.
West Ham Secure Evan Ferguson on Loan
West Ham United have officially announced the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson on a season-long loan.
Ferguson, 20, has struggled for regular playing time at Brighton since Fabian Hurzeler took charge in the summer. However, he remains highly rated after breaking into the first team at just 16.
New West Ham manager Graham Potter, who previously worked with Ferguson at Brighton, was instrumental in bringing the Irish striker to London Stadium. Ferguson will don the number 34 shirt as he looks to add to the 12 Premier League goals he netted under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, now managing Marseille.
Brighton Sign Stefanos Tzimas for £20.8m
Brighton have confirmed the acquisition of Stefanos Tzimas from Bundesliga 2 side FC Nürnberg for a reported £20.8m, pending international clearance.
The Greece Under-21 international has signed a contract running until June 2030. However, he will remain in Germany with Nürnberg for the remainder of the season before linking up with Brighton in the summer.
Manchester City Closing in on Porto’s Nico Gonzalez
Manchester City are set to complete the signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez, bringing their January spending close to £180m.
City initially hesitated over the 23-year-old’s £50m release clause, with ESPN reporting that the club preferred a £33m deal. However, Porto remained firm on their valuation, partly due to a sell-on clause owed to Barcelona, which could see them receive up to 40% of the fee.
According to Fabrizio Romano, City ultimately agreed to pay the full amount in structured instalments rather than triggering the clause outright. This allowed Gonzalez to travel to Manchester in time for a medical and to finalise the contract before the deadline.
Mathys Tel Agrees to Spurs Loan Move
Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has reportedly accepted a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day, just days after rejecting a permanent transfer to the club.
The 19-year-old’s future has been widely discussed throughout January, as he sought more first-team opportunities.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg first reported Tel’s acceptance of the loan move to Tottenham, with multiple outlets later confirming the news. Notably, the deal does not include a purchase clause, meaning Tel will return to Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Christopher Nkunku Rejects Manchester United Move
Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku has decided to remain at Stamford Bridge despite transfer interest from Manchester United, multiple reports confirm.
Nkunku has struggled for consistent game time at Chelsea this season, making only three Premier League starts. Instead, he has been relegated to cup competitions, where he has regularly featured and found the back of the net.
There were discussions earlier this year about a potential swap deal that would have sent Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea in exchange for Nkunku. Bayern Munich also showed interest, but United revived their bid in the final hours of the transfer window. However, Nkunku ultimately opted to stay at Chelsea.
Joao Felix Set for AC Milan Move
Joao Felix is on the verge of joining AC Milan on loan after the Serie A giants reached an agreement with Chelsea.
The 25-year-old signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge last summer after joining from Atletico Madrid for £42m plus £4.3m in add-ons. He had previously spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan in West London.
However, competition for minutes under Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, and Cole Palmer ahead of him, has seen Felix play primarily in the Conference League group stage this season.
Milan, who earlier secured the signing of Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, have also agreed to pay Chelsea an additional £4.5m loan fee for Felix.
Conclusion
As the transfer window slams shut in only a few short hours, several major moves have been confirmed across the Premier League. However, it is still interesting to see Tottenham’s decision to pull out of the Axel Disasi deal, Liverpool’s Jayden Danns securing a loan move to Sunderland and West Ham’s acquisition of Evan Ferguson headline the Premier League’s potential deals on the final day. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s significant investment in Nico Gonzalez and Joao Felix’s move to AC Milan underscore a busy January window.
