Crystal Palace vs Brentford Report
Scorers: Esse 85’; Mbeumo 66’ (P), Schade 80’
Brentford achieved their first league double over Crystal Palace since the 1955/56 season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park.
Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade ensured the Bees extended their impressive away form, while Palace fell to their first defeat of 2025.
First Half: Even Battle as Both Keepers Shine
Crystal Palace started confidently, with Eberechi Eze showcasing his creativity early on. The midfielder almost added to his impressive assist tally with a clever backheel to Jean-Philippe Mateta, whose curling effort was saved by Brentford keeper Mark Flekken.
However, attacking moments were rare in a largely cautious opening period, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances.
Brentford eventually found their rhythm, with Yoane Wissa testing Palace’s Dean Henderson with a low shot from distance.
The visitors grew in confidence, as Bryan Mbeumo came close with a powerful free-kick that narrowly missed the target.
Palace responded through Eze, who found space on the edge of the area but produced a tame shot, leaving the teams level at the break for the third straight PL match.
Second Half: Brentford Capitalise in Chaotic Period
The second half started in lively fashion, with both sides trading chances. Palace almost broke the deadlock when Eze’s deflected free-kick clipped the post.
Moments later, Brentford were awarded a penalty after Maxence Lacroix fouled Nathan Collins. However, Mbeumo failed to convert, striking the post.
The miss seemed momentary, as Brentford were handed a reprieve when Palace’s Marc Guéhi was penalised for encroachment. Mbeumo made no mistake with his second attempt, confidently firing past Henderson for his third away goal in two matches.
Brentford doubled their lead with 10 minutes remaining, as Mikkel Damsgaard’s precise cross found Kevin Schade, who powered a header into the net.
While Palace pulled one back late on through debutant Romain Esse, who converted Daniel Muñoz’s low cross, they failed to build on the momentum in the dying minutes.
What It Means
- Brentford: The win marks their second consecutive away victory, moving them closer to the European spots and demonstrating their ability to grind out results on the road.
- Crystal Palace: A first defeat of the year leaves Palace needing to sharpen their attacking edge as they aim to remain in the top half of the table.
