Manchester City vs Chelsea Report

Scorers: Gvardiol 42’, Haaland 68’, Foden 87’; Madueke 3’

Manchester City showcased their resilience by coming from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Chelsea, extending their unbeaten run in this Premier League (PL) fixture to 11 matches (D2,

Despite a calamitous start, Pep Guardiola’s side recovered to leapfrog Chelsea into fourth place.

First Half: Chelsea Strike Early Amidst City’s Chaos

The game got off to a dramatic start when City debutant Abdukodir Khusanov made a costly error in just the third minute.

A misjudged header from the Uzbekistani defender fell kindly for Nicolas Jackson, who teed up Noni Madueke to slot into an empty net, giving Chelsea an early advantage.

Chelsea looked sharp in the opening exchanges, almost doubling their lead when Cole Palmer’s through ball to Jackson forced the striker wide.

However, the visitors failed to capitalise on their strong start, and City gradually found their rhythm. Phil Foden, in fine form, struck the post with a thunderous effort before Joško Gvardiol squandered a golden opportunity, blazing over from close range.

City’s pressure finally paid off in the 38th minute. Matheus Nunes showed great awareness to create space in the box, and Gvardiol atoned for his earlier miss, sweeping the ball into the net to level the scores before halftime.

Second Half: City Dominate and Haaland Shines

City picked up where they left off after the break, dominating possession and forcing Chelsea into errors. A warning came early as Levi Colwill miscontrolled a long ball, gifting Erling Haaland a chance that he failed to convert.

However, the Norwegian striker soon found his mark, capitalising on an inch-perfect long ball from Ederson. Haaland calmly lobbed an advancing Robert Sánchez to give City the lead in the 68th minute.

Chelsea struggled to respond as Guardiola’s men tightened their grip on the game. The champions sealed the victory with a counter-attacking masterclass in the 81st minute.

Haaland used his physicality to hold off a defender before laying the ball off to Foden, who raced clear and slotted past Sánchez for his sixth goal in four PL outings.

What It Means

  • Manchester City: The champions move into fourth place, level on points with Newcastle United in fifth, as they continue to fight for consistency in a competitive top-four race.
  • Chelsea: Enzo Maresca’s side drop to sixth, trailing City by a point. A lack of composure in the second half underlined ongoing issues with defensive lapses.
