Liverpool vs Ipswich Report

Scorers: Szoboszlai 11’, Salah 35’, Gakpo 44’, 66’; Greaves 90’

Liverpool continued their relentless push for the Premier League (PL) title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Anfield. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, and Cody Gakpo ensured the Reds maintained their six-point cushion at the top of the table, extending their unbeaten league run to 18 matches in style.

First Half: Dominance from the Start

Intent on avoiding a slow start, Liverpool immediately took control of proceedings. Their early pressure paid off in the 11th minute when Ibrahima Konaté delivered a superb line-breaking pass to Dominik Szoboszlai, who expertly curled the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.

It was the Hungarian’s fourth league goal of the season and a testament to his growing influence in the midfield.

Ipswich’s task became even tougher when Wes Burns was stretchered off with a knee injury shortly after the opener, disrupting Kieran McKenna’s plans further.

Liverpool capitalized on the visitors’ disarray, doubling their lead in the 35th minute. A pinpoint cross from Cody Gakpo found Mohamed Salah at the back post, and the Egyptian made no mistake, smashing the ball high into the roof of the net for his 12th PL goal of the campaign.

Liverpool rounded off an impressive first half with a third goal on the stroke of halftime. After Szoboszlai’s initial effort was parried, Gakpo reacted quickest to slot home the rebound, joining Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie as the only Dutch players to score in five consecutive PL home matches.

Second Half: Liverpool Complete the Rout

With a commanding lead, Liverpool dictated the tempo after the interval. Ipswich fans had a brief moment of joy when Omari Hutchinson registered their first shot on target in the 60th minute, but it was comfortably saved by Alisson.

The respite was short-lived, as Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a trademark cross into the box, finding Gakpo, who headed in Liverpool’s fourth goal and his eighth of the season.

Alexander-Arnold came close to adding a fifth for the hosts, first firing wide from distance and then hitting the post from close range. Despite the near misses, Liverpool remained in control, registering a dominant performance that showcased their attacking prowess.

Ipswich managed to salvage a late consolation in the 90th minute when Jacob Greaves headed home Julio Enciso’s corner. While it spared the Tractor Boys a third consecutive defeat to nil, it did little to mask their struggles against the league leaders.

What It Means

  • Liverpool: The Reds (W15, D3) are firmly in control of the title race, six points clear at the summit. They’ve now won 11 consecutive home matches against promoted teams, reinforcing Anfield’s reputation as a fortress.
  • Ipswich Town: Despite the defeat, Ipswich remain just above the relegation zone on goal difference, with their survival hopes still alive.

What’s Next?

Liverpool will aim to keep their momentum alive with a tricky away trip to Bournemouth next weekend. Meanwhile, Ipswich face a crucial bottom-of-the-table clash at home against Southampton as they continue fighting to climb out of the relegation zone.
