Brentford vs Liverpool Report
Scorers: Nunez 90+1’, 90+3’
Liverpool extended their lead at the Premier League (PL) summit to seven points with a 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, courtesy of two stoppage-time goals from Darwin Núñez.
The result marked the Reds’ 10th win in their last 12 H2H clashes with the Bees, as Arne Slot’s side showcased resilience and quality under pressure.
First Half: Opportunities Without a Breakthrough
Liverpool, aware of their precarious position atop the PL standings, started cautiously, allowing Brentford to enjoy early momentum.
Within the opening five minutes, Mikkel Damsgaard squandered a golden opportunity, failing to connect with Mads Roerslev inviting a low cross from close range. The miss set the tone for a half in which both sides had their chances but lacked clinical finishing.
Ryan Gravenberch’s thunderous shot from distance forced Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken into action, while Dominik Szoboszlai rattled the crossbar with a venomous strike.
Brentford, determined to make their home advantage count, threatened through Christian Nørgaard, who headed over from a Bryan Mbeumo free-kick.
Despite Liverpool’s territorial dominance, Brentford’s defensive organisation kept the Reds at bay. Cody Gakpo nearly broke the deadlock late in the half, only for Flekken to deny him with a crucial intervention.
Second Half: Liverpool Turn Up the Heat
The Reds resumed control after the interval, dominating possession and testing Brentford’s resilience. Liverpool’s corner count quickly reached double digits, with Brentford’s rearguard remaining resolute.
Luis Díaz’s low strike demanded another sharp save from Flekken, and Darwin Núñez, introduced as a substitute, headed wide with one of his first touches.
Brentford’s threat on the counter was exemplified by Bryan Mbeumo, who twice tested Alisson late on. First, the Brazilian tipped away a well-placed free-kick before reacting smartly to stop a powerful low drive.
As Liverpool grew increasingly desperate, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s audacious long-range strike narrowly missed the target, epitomising the visitors’ mounting frustration.
Stoppage Time Drama: Núñez Shines
Just when it seemed Brentford would hold firm for a point, Liverpool’s persistence paid off. Trent Alexander-Arnold found Núñez in the box, and the Uruguayan striker made no mistake, slotting home in the 93rd minute to break the deadlock.
Moments later, Harvey Elliott teed up Núñez for his second, as the forward calmly slotted past Flekken to seal the victory and send the travelling fans into raptures.
