Southampton vs Swansea FA Cup Report
Scorers: Sulemana 20’, Dibling 35’ 65’
Southampton eased past Swansea City with a dominant 3-0 victory in the FA Cup third round at St Mary’s.
Kamaldeen Sulemana’s composed finish and a brace from young prospect Tyler Dibling secured the Saints’ progression into the fourth round. Swansea, despite glimpses of promise, failed to seriously test the Premier League side.
First Half: Sulemana and Dibling Shine
Both teams began cautiously, but Southampton quickly found their rhythm. In the 20th minute, Sulemana opened the scoring in style, lofting the ball over Swansea debutant goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin after Aaron Ramsdale’s long clearance was flicked into his path.
Sulemana’s movement and sharpness proved a constant threat throughout the match.
The Saints doubled their lead 10 minutes before halftime when Sulemana turned provider. His intelligent run and low cross found Dibling, who calmly finished from close range.
Swansea struggled to contain the Premier League side’s intensity, with few chances to respond in the first half.
Second Half: Dibling Seals the Win
The second half offered little reprieve for Swansea, who remained on the back foot. Dibling added his second goal of the night midway through the period, capitalising on poor defending by Josh Tymon and Kyle Naughton to slot home and effectively end the contest.
Swansea showed brief signs of life, with Joe Allen hitting the post after the visitors won possession high up the field.
Myles Peart-Harris also attempted to carve out opportunities but was crowded out by a disciplined Southampton defence. Josh Ginnelly’s introduction marked a welcome return after his lengthy injury layoff, but it came too late to influence proceedings.
Swansea’s Struggles
Luke Williams’ side failed to mount significant pressure, with only Joe Allen’s late effort coming close to a breakthrough. While Swansea were up against superior opposition, their inability to consistently threaten in attack will be a concern for Williams moving forward.
What’s Next?
Southampton advance to the FA Cup fourth round with a much-needed morale boost, marking just their fourth win in all competitions this season.
Swansea, meanwhile, return to Championship action, hoping to bounce back after a tough outing against higher-level opposition.
