Brentford vs Newcastle Preview

  • Draw or Brentford win
  • Both teams to score

Brentford return to the comforts of home as they host Newcastle United in what promises to be a high-intensity Premier League clash.

While the Bees aim to capitalise on their stellar home form, Newcastle arrive looking to build on a spirited midweek performance.

Brentford: Fortress at Home

Brentford’s struggles on the road were highlighted again midweek as they fell 3-1 to Aston Villa, continuing their dismal away record this season (D1, L6).

However, Thomas Frank’s side has been a different beast at the Gtech Community Stadium, where they remain unbeaten in the league this season (W6, D1).

The Bees have collected more home points (19) than any other Premier League side, scoring an impressive 22 goals across those matches.

This marks their best home tally at this stage of a campaign since 1971/72, when they were competing in the fourth tier.

Mikkel Damsgaard will be key for Brentford after scoring their consolation goal midweek. The Danish playmaker has directly contributed to five goals in his last four home league appearances (G1, A4), showcasing his influence at the Gtech.

Newcastle United: Consistency Needed

Newcastle showed resilience in a thrilling 3-3 draw with league leaders Liverpool during the week, salvaging a point after leading twice.

Eddie Howe labeled the performance a “big jump forward,” as his side looks to solidify their push for European qualification.

The Magpies boast a strong record against Brentford, going unbeaten in their last six top-flight H2Hs (W5, D1).

Additionally, they’ve won their last five away league games against the Bees, with only a longer such streak against Derby (1951-1965) in club history.

Harvey Barnes remains a potent weapon for Newcastle on the road, with three of his four Premier League goals this season coming away from home.

Notably, he has scored in each of his last two away H2Hs against Brentford, making him a player to watch.

Key Battles

Mikkel Damsgaard vs Newcastle’s Midfield

Damsgaard’s creativity and ability to unlock defences will test Newcastle’s midfield and defensive organization. Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali will need to track his movements closely to prevent him from dictating play.

Harvey Barnes vs Brentford’s Defence

Barnes’ pace and clinical finishing make him a constant threat on the counterattack. Brentford’s defenders must remain disciplined to deny him space in wide areas and prevent him from adding to his impressive away record.

Tactical Analysis

Brentford will likely play to their strengths at home, using their high press and dynamic attack to disrupt Newcastle’s buildup.

Frank’s side will aim to create chances through quick transitions and capitalise on set pieces, where they have been particularly dangerous.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will look to control possession and exploit Brentford’s defensive gaps on the break. With Barnes and Alexander Isak leading the line, the Magpies will rely on their attacking depth to trouble Brentford’s backline.

Prediction: Brentford 2-2 Newcastle

This clash has all the ingredients for an entertaining and closely fought encounter. Brentford’s exceptional home form and Newcastle’s attacking prowess suggest a high-scoring affair, with both sides likely to find the back of the net.

Expect Damsgaard and Barnes to play pivotal roles, contributing to their teams’ attacking efforts. While Brentford’s fortress-like home form gives them a slight edge, Newcastle’s resilience and quality should ensure they leave London with a point.
