Manchester City vs Feyenoord Report

Scorers: Haaland 44 (P)’, 53’, Gundogan 50’; Hadj Moussa 75’, Gimenez 82’, Hancko 89’

Manchester City’s dismal form showed no signs of improvement as they squandered a 3-0 lead, allowing Feyenoord to secure a remarkable 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s men extended their winless streak to six games across all competitions, raising further questions about their defensive vulnerabilities.

First Half: City Dominant but Feyenoord Resilient

City started brightly, with Erling Haaland almost opening the scoring after 10 minutes, only to be denied by Timon Wellenreuther’s incredible save, clawing the ball off the post.

The German goalkeeper kept busy, surviving a scare after gifting possession to Bernardo Silva, whose cutback to Jack Grealish resulted in a deflected effort going wide.

Feyenoord grew into the game, with Igor Paixão and Inbeom Hwang testing Ederson. However, City broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Haaland converted from the penalty spot after being fouled by Quinten Timber. Despite late Feyenoord pressure, City went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

Second Half: City Surge, Feyenoord Fight Back

City came out firing in the second half, doubling their lead just four minutes in when İlkay Gündoğan’s deflected volley left Wellenreuther helpless.

The floodgates seemed to open as Matheus Nunes intercepted a loose pass and set up Haaland for his second, putting City in a commanding 3-0 lead.

However, defensive lapses haunted the Cityzens again, as Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Joško Gvardiol’s miscommunication allowed Anis Hadj-Moussa to pull one back in the 76th minute.

Sensing vulnerability, Feyenoord pressed forward, and Santiago Gimenez bundled in a rebound to make it 3-2 with nine minutes left.

In a stunning finale, Paixão’s cross found Dávid Hancko at the back post, with the Slovakian heading into an empty net after Ederson was caught out of position. Grealish almost salvaged a late winner, but his deflected shot rattled the crossbar in stoppage time.

What’s Next?

  • Manchester City: The Premier League champions face mounting pressure as they look to end their winless run against Burnley in their next domestic outing.
  • Feyenoord: The Dutch side will carry momentum into their next Eredivisie clash, aiming to maintain their unbeaten away record this season.

City’s latest setback not only jeopardizes their UCL campaign but also leaves Guardiola with plenty to ponder about his team’s defensive frailties. Meanwhile, Feyenoord’s fighting spirit and tactical discipline earned them a valuable point to keep their European hopes alive.
