Manchester United Throw Away Lead Again in 1-1 Draw with Fenerbahçe

For the third consecutive UEFA Europa League match this season, Manchester United squandered a lead, drawing 1-1 with Fenerbahçe at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

The result leaves United with just one win from their last 11 European matches, compounding the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

First Half: Eriksen’s Strike Gives United the Lead

Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho, who led Manchester United to Europa League glory in 2017, sought a much-needed win, setting his team out to attack. Manchester United, meanwhile, absorbed the early pressure, content to sit back and hit on the counter.

This approach paid off after 15 minutes, when a swift breakaway led to the opening goal. Manuel Ugarte won the ball in midfield, and Alejandro Garnacho’s cutback eventually found Christian Eriksen via Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee, with the Danish midfielder rifling his shot into the top corner.

Marcus Rashford nearly doubled United’s lead shortly after, cutting in from the right and narrowly missing the target. However, Fenerbahçe quickly reasserted control, with United relying on Ugarte to block a goalbound effort from Dušan Tadić.

United goalkeeper André Onana then pulled off a miraculous double save to deny Youssef En-Nesyri from a pair of headers, ensuring the Red Devils took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Second Half: En-Nesyri Equalizes, Mourinho Sees Red

The second half saw Fenerbahçe come out strongly, and it didn’t take long for the hosts to find the equaliser.

Four minutes after the restart, Youssef En-Nesyri headed home from an Allan Saint-Maximin cross, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

The hosts continued to apply pressure, and Mourinho was sent off after protesting when a penalty wasn’t awarded following a challenge on Bright Osayi-Samuel by Ugarte.

Manchester United had chances of their own, particularly through Diogo Dalot, who burst free down the right but overhit his cross with several teammates waiting in the box.

Alejandro Garnacho remained a threat, forcing a save from Dominik Livaković with a low drive, but United were unable to find a winner.

The match was delayed late on after Antony was stretchered off, taking the momentum out of the game. Both teams had chances to snatch victory, but the match ultimately ended 1-1, leaving both sides frustrated.

Conclusion

Manchester United’s European struggles continue, as they once again threw away a lead to draw 1-1 with Fenerbahçe.

Christian Eriksen’s early strike gave United hope, but Youssef En-Nesyri’s equaliser and José Mourinho’s animated touchline antics added to the drama.

Despite chances for both sides, the game ended in a draw, leaving United winless in Europe for the last 12 months. Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, maintain their unbeaten start to the UEL campaign, though Mourinho’s poor record against former sides persists.
