RB Leipzig vs Liverpool Report

Scorers: Núñez 27’

Liverpool continued their 100% start to the UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena.

Darwin Núñez’s first-half goal was enough to secure the win, extending the Reds’ strong record against Bundesliga sides, having now won eight of their last nine UCL matches against German opposition.

First Half: Leipzig Threaten, but Núñez Strikes for Liverpool

Liverpool arrived in Germany brimming with confidence, having made their best start to a season since 1990/91.

However, Leipzig, who were unbeaten in the Bundesliga, began brightly, with Benjamin Šeško testing Caoimhin Kelleher twice in the early stages. Amadou Haidara also saw his powerful effort well saved by the Irish goalkeeper.

Leipzig thought they had taken the lead just before the half-hour mark when Loïs Openda’s clever finish found the net, but the assistant referee’s flag ruled it out for offside.

The Red Bull Arena was soon silenced, as Liverpool took the lead moments later. Mohamed Salah’s goalbound header was poked in by Darwin Núñez, giving the Reds the advantage and extending their streak of scoring in 16 consecutive away UCL matches.

Liverpool came close to doubling their lead before halftime, with Núñez and Virgil van Dijk forcing saves from Leipzig goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, who was keeping his side in the contest.

Second Half: Liverpool Hold Firm Under Pressure

Gulácsi continued to frustrate his former club after the break, denying Cody Gakpo and gathering Núñez’s tricky effort as Liverpool sought to extend their lead.

Alexis Mac Allister then struck the crossbar with a powerful shot from outside the area, but the Reds couldn’t find a second goal to kill off the game.

As the match entered the closing stages, Kelleher was called into action again, denying Šeško from close range before making a crucial save to tip Xavi Simons’ dipping effort over the bar.

Openda thought he had levelled the match late on, but once again, the flag went up to deny the Belgian forward.

Despite Leipzig’s late pressure, Liverpool held on for a valuable 1-0 win, moving level on points with Aston Villa at the top of the UCL league phase standings.

Leipzig, meanwhile, have now lost seven of their last nine encounters with English opposition and face an uphill battle to progress, having lost all three of their UCL group stage matches so far.

Conclusion

Liverpool’s gritty 1-0 win over RB Leipzig sees them maintain their perfect start to the UCL campaign.

Darwin Núñez’s goal and some key saves from Caoimhin Kelleher were enough to secure the victory, leaving Liverpool level on points with Aston Villa at the top of the UCL standings.

Leipzig, however, find themselves in a difficult position, with three defeats from three matches leaving their hopes of progression hanging by a thread.
