Ferencvaros vs Tottenham Report

Scorers: Varga 90’; Sarr 23’, Johnson 86’

Tottenham Hotspur recorded their fifth consecutive win across all competitions with a 2-1 victory over Ferencváros at the Groupama Arena, maintaining their perfect start to the UEFA Europa League league phase.

Ferencváros Threaten Early But Spurs Take Control

Following a 3-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United and a 3-0 win against Qarabağ on matchday one of the UEL, Tottenham were eager to build on their momentum. However, Ferencváros, determined to bounce back from their 2-1 loss to Anderlecht, started brightly and tested the Spurs defence early on. Barnabás Varga and Adama Traoré fired off early attempts, and the hosts thought they had taken the lead when Varga headed in Eldar Ćivić’s cross. However, the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside, keeping the game goalless.

The disallowed goal served as a wake-up call for Tottenham, who began to assert themselves. Midway through the first half, Spurs broke the deadlock when Pape Matar Sarr slotted home from close range after the ball fell to him in the box.

Dénes Dibusz, Ferencváros’ goalkeeper, was called into action multiple times, denying Sarr a second goal and keeping out Tottenham’s efforts. Pedro Porro came close to doubling the visitors’ lead, striking the post as Spurs looked to secure a more comfortable margin.

Second Half: Tottenham Hold Firm and Johnson Secures the Win

After the break, Ferencváros almost found an equaliser through Matheus Saldanha, whose low strike required a superb diving save from Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario. Despite showing attacking intent, clear-cut chances were scarce for the hosts, while Spurs looked more likely to score, with Cristian Romero and debutant Will Lankshear narrowly missing the target.

As the match reached its final stages, both teams adopted a more open approach—Ferencváros in search of an equaliser and Tottenham aiming to seal the win. The latter succeeded as substitute Brennan Johnson netted his fifth goal in as many games, curling a shot off the post to make it 2-0.

Although Barnabás Varga volleyed in a late goal for Ferencváros to bring the score to 2-1, the hosts couldn’t find an equaliser, leaving them without a normal-time European win in their last six fixtures.

Tottenham’s Strong Form and Ferencváros’ Struggles

Tottenham’s win leaves them in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages of the UEL, marking just their second away victory in continental competitions in their last nine attempts. Meanwhile, Ferencváros, still winless in this campaign, will need to regroup as they continue to search for their first points in the league phase.

 Key Moments

  • Disallowed Goal (16′): Barnabás Varga’s header is ruled out for a narrow offside after he connects with Eldar Ćivić’s cross.
  • Sarr’s Opener (25′): Pape Matar Sarr reacts quickly to a loose ball in the box, slotting it into the corner to give Spurs the lead.
  • Johnson’s Impact (85′): Brennan Johnson curls a strike off the post to make it 2-0 and secure Tottenham’s victory.
  • Varga’s Consolation (90′): Barnabás Varga volleys in from close range to reduce the deficit, but it’s not enough to salvage a point.

Conclusion

Tottenham’s controlled performance and timely goals earned them a valuable 2-1 away win, keeping their perfect start in the UEL intact and extending their winning streak to five matches across all competitions. Ferencváros will need to regroup as they remain winless in their European campaign, looking for improvements in their upcoming fixtures.
