Most Interesting Statistics From This Weekend’s Premier League Games

Nine of the 10 games of matchday 6 have been played and it has been thoroughly enjoyable, with some impressive performances (yes, Cole Palmer, we see you) and embarrassing home defeats.

So while we gear up for Bournemouth taking on Southampton tonight, why don’t we have a look at the best EPL stats from Saturday’s and Sunday’s games?

You can also read all our match reports if you click here.

The Bees Take Flight Early Again

All of us here at EPLNews thought that Brentford couldn’t possibly open the scoring AGAIN in the first minute and boy, were we wrong! Bryan Mbeumo fired in a great volley after 37 seconds against West Ham, making the Bees the only EPL team ever to score in the first minute of three consecutive games.

After getting a goal 22 seconds into the game against City and 23 seconds versus Tottenham, everyone’s favourite strong starters have done it again. The only downside is that there seems to be such a thing as scoring too early, because all their starting endeavours have only earned them a point out of these three goals.

Manchester City Like Playing Against Newcastle

Josko Gvardiol’s goal against the Magpies in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off was the 32nd game in a row against them that they have found the net. This is now the longest streak one side has scored against another in the history of the Premier League.

While the game did end in a draw (second one in a row for the Cityzens), there might just be something about City playing against the black-and-white of Newcastle that makes them see red.

Anthony Gordon Relishes Big Games

Speaking of the Newcastle vs City game, Gordon won a penalty that he converted himself. With this strike he made it seven home games of the last eight against ‘big six’ opposition that he gets a goal in.

That rumoured new contract cannot be signed soon enough.

Cole Palmer. That Is All.

Well, no, that’s not all. We could wax lyrical about him for a day or so, given his extraordinary performance against Brighton on Saturday.

He went on and scored FOUR times, becoming the first EPL player ever to get four goals in the first half of a single Prem game. Furthermore, he now has three hat-tricks for Chelsea in the league, the joint-most for a Blues’ player in the competition. The others? Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard. Not bad company to be in.

Manchester United Are In Trouble

And have been in trouble since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it seems. Their latest defeat was a humiliating one and it brought about another stat that shows us just how good the Scot was.

Opta have pointed out that United have lost 22 out of 1,035 league games by three or more goals under their legendary manager. However, in the 424 EPL matches since his departure, they have now 23 such defeats.

How much more time does Erik ten Hag get?
