AC Milan vs Liverpool Report

Scorers: Pulisic 3’; Konate 23’, Van Dijk 41’, Szoboszlai 67’

Liverpool came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over AC Milan in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) return, marking their third consecutive head-to-head win against the Italian giants.

AC Milan’s Fast Start and Early Lead

AC Milan wasted no time making their mark on the match, taking the lead within the first three minutes. Álvaro Morata played a clever ball through to Christian Pulisic, who, finding himself without support, unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner to give Milan an early advantage.

The celebrations left Théo Hernandez with a bloodied mouth, but Liverpool initially struggled to respond as Mohamed Salah’s effort smashed against the crossbar, narrowly missing an equaliser.

Liverpool’s Response and Konaté’s Equaliser

Liverpool eventually found their footing and equalised in the 23rd minute. Davide Calabria’s sliding challenge on Cody Gakpo resulted in a free-kick for Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a perfectly floated ball into the box, which Ibrahima Konaté met with a dominant header to level the score.

Following this, chances began to come more frequently for Liverpool. Diogo Jota slid an attempt wide, and Salah was again denied by the crossbar, with the ball deflecting off Mike Maignan’s boot and away from danger.

Van Dijk’s Milestone and Liverpool’s Lead

Another set-piece gave Liverpool the lead before halftime. Virgil van Dijk, marking his 50th UCL appearance, headed in Kostas Tsimikas’ corner delivery to put the Reds in front.

Maignan managed to save Gakpo’s shot before the break but had to be substituted in the 51st minute due to injury.

His replacement, 19-year-old Lorenzo Torriani, made a brave debut by denying Dominik Szoboszlai on two occasions.

However, the young keeper couldn’t stop the Hungarian a third time. Gakpo sliced through Milan’s defence and set up Szoboszlai, who finished off the post to extend Liverpool’s lead to 3-1.

Liverpool Holds On and Milan’s Missed Opportunities

Tammy Abraham had a chance to bring Milan back into the game after an underhit pass from Alisson Becker, but he failed to capitalise.

Liverpool maintained their composure to see out the match, convincingly bouncing back from their Premier League loss to Nottingham Forest.

Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool now have four wins in their last five matches. In contrast, AC Milan continues to struggle, with only one win from their five competitive games this season.

The road ahead doesn’t get easier for Paulo Fonseca’s side, with challenging fixtures against Internazionale and Bayer Leverkusen looming.

Conclusion

Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over AC Milan in the UCL showcases their resilience and ability to come from behind in high-pressure matches.

Goals from Ibrahima Konaté, Virgil van Dijk, and Dominik Szoboszlai secured the win, highlighting Liverpool’s set-piece prowess and attacking depth. Milan, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly as they face tough upcoming fixtures in their campaign.
