Wolves vs Newcastle Report

Scorers: Lemina 36’; Schar 75’, Barnes 80’

Fabian Schär and Harvey Barnes struck two brilliant late goals as Newcastle United came from behind to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1, extending their unbeaten start to the Premier League season (W3, D1).

Early Dominance from Newcastle

Newcastle United entered the match with high confidence, having won each of their last seven matches following an international break.

This momentum was evident in the opening 10 minutes as Jacob Murphy’s sharp effort was tipped over the bar by Wolves’ goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The Magpies continued to look the more threatening side as the first half unfolded.

Anthony Gordon came close to breaking the deadlock, his marauding run ending with a curled strike that cannoned off the far post, much to Wolves’ relief.

Wolves Take the Lead

Grateful for their reprieve, Wolverhampton took advantage in the 36th minute with a superb counter-attacking goal.

Jørgen Strand Larsen’s cut-back was brilliantly dummied by João Gomes, leaving Mario Lemina with a simple tap-in from six yards to give Wolves the lead. Sensing an opportunity to further capitalise, Gary O’Neil’s side pushed for a second goal.

However, Lemina missed a chance to extend the lead, dragging his shot wide from the edge of the box, allowing Newcastle to avoid further damage before the break.

Newcastle’s Resilience and Second-Half Turnaround

Newcastle started the second half in similar fashion to the first, applying pressure on the Wolves’ defence. Bruno Guimarães tested Johnstone with a long-range strike, and Craig Dawson blocked a powerful drive from Gordon.

At the other end, Wolves came close to doubling their lead when Strand Larsen drilled a first-time shot against the base of the post. As the game approached the final half-hour, Wolves continued to create chances, but Nick Pope made crucial saves to deny Strand Larsen and Matheus Cunha.

Schär and Barnes Seal the Comeback

Persistently searching for an equaliser, Newcastle’s efforts were finally rewarded in the 75th minute. Fabian Schär unleashed a long-range strike that deflected off Dawson, flying into the top corner to level the scores. The Magpies’ turnaround was completed just five minutes later, when substitute Harvey Barnes made an instant impact. Cutting inside his marker on the edge of the box, Barnes curled a sublime effort into the far corner, leaving Wolves stunned by the quick-fire double.

Wolves’ Late Attempts and Newcastle’s Victory

Desperate to salvage something from the match, Wolves pushed forward in the closing stages. Matheus Cunha had a late chance, but Nick Pope produced a diving save to preserve Newcastle’s lead.

The Magpies held on for an impressive 2-1 victory on the road, showcasing their resilience and quality to come from behind and secure all three points.

Conclusion

Newcastle United’s late goals from Schär and Barnes secured a hard-fought comeback victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This win extends Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season and highlights their ability to dig deep and respond when trailing. Meanwhile, Wolves will be left to ponder missed opportunities after a promising start, as they failed to secure what would have been a valuable win.
