Newcastle vs Tottenham Report

Scorers: Barnes 37’, Isak 78’; Burn (OG) 56’

Newcastle United claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to a late winner from Alexander Isak. This triumph means the Magpies have now won two of their first three Premier League matches for the first time since the 2011 season.

The result also extended Newcastle’s unbeaten home run to ten games, reinforcing their strong form at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s Fast Start

Newcastle came into this fixture looking to replicate their dominant 4-0 win over Spurs from last season. They started the game on the front foot, with Alexander Isak nearly opening the scoring early on. His cross-turned-shot clipped the top of the bar, signalling the Magpies’ attacking intent.

Shortly after, Harvey Barnes came close to finding the net, cutting in from the left wing and unleashing a shot with his right foot that narrowly missed the far post. Newcastle’s momentum was briefly halted by an unexpected stoppage to replace an assistant referee, which allowed Tottenham to find their footing in the match.

Tottenham’s Response

Spurs had a golden opportunity to take the lead through new signing Wilson Odobert, but he failed to capitalise, blasting his shot over the bar. Nick Pope, Newcastle’s goalkeeper, was called into action twice by Pape Matar Sarr’s powerful long-range efforts, both of which could have easily beaten the keeper with a slight deflection.

Despite Tottenham‘s pressure, it was Newcastle who struck first. A quick throw-in led to Lloyd Kelly finding space on the left wing, from where he delivered a precise cross to Harvey Barnes. The winger calmly slotted the ball into the far corner, putting the hosts ahead just before the break.

Tottenham’s Equaliser

Tottenham looked deflated after conceding but returned from the half-time interval with renewed energy. They hit the bar and saw another chance go begging when Odobert fired over from a Brennan Johnson cross. These were clear warnings of an equaliser that came just before the hour mark.

Nick Pope managed to parry a shot from James Maddison, but the rebound fell to Johnson, whose follow-up effort deflected off Dan Burn and into the net, levelling the score at 1-1.

Isak’s Late Heroics

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe responded to the equaliser by introducing Sandro Tonali, who was making his first Premier League appearance since November 2023 after serving a lengthy ban. Tonali’s presence on the field seemed to invigorate Newcastle, leading to a late surge.

Anthony Gordon nearly restored Newcastle’s lead with a near-post effort that was well saved by Guglielmo Vicario. However, the breakthrough came minutes later. Josh Murphy sprinted away from the Spurs defence, entering the penalty area before squaring the ball to Alexander Isak, who made no mistake in nudging it past Vicario to seal the victory.

Conclusion

This win brings Tottenham back down to earth following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Everton in their previous outing. For Newcastle, the win not only marks an excellent start to their Premier League campaign but also extends their unbeaten home streak to ten games.

The Magpies will be looking to build on this momentum as they continue their quest for a strong league finish.
