3 Questions ahead of Spain vs England in the EURO 2024 Final
After a month of intense action in Germany, the grand finale now boils down to one game in Berlin as Spain and England clash for European Championship glory.
EPLNews has the three biggest questions ahead of this highly anticipated contest.
Will Spain Choke as Favourites?
Spain has been the standout team of the tournament, with Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Dani Olmo, Rodri, and Fabián Ruiz all shining throughout. They have won all six of their games so far, the most victories any nation has secured in a single edition of the EUROs since the inception of the group stage format. Only France in 1984 managed to win the competition with a perfect record.
Spain’s attacking prowess is formidable, with 13 goals scored so far, just one shy of France’s record of 14 goals in a single European Championship. Additionally, Spain aims to become the first country to win four consecutive World Cup/European Championship finals, as well as four EURO titles.
While England has shown improvement as the competition progressed, Spain’s consistent performance makes them the favourites. Will the pressure affect them, or can they finish the job and lift the trophy?
Who Will Southgate Trust at Left-Back?
England manager Gareth Southgate faces a significant decision regarding his left-back selection for the final at the Olympiastadion. Luke Shaw, who returned from injury to feature against Switzerland and the Netherlands, is now fully fit. However, he has not started a game in five months.
The left-back chosen will face the daunting task of marking Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal, who turns 17 the day before the final, becoming the youngest player ever to play in a World Cup or European Championship final, surpassing Pelé’s record.
Kieran Trippier, who has performed well so far, may get the nod given his ability to handle players cutting inside, where Yamal does much of his damage. Should Southgate stick with Trippier, or trust Shaw to handle the young Barcelona wonderkid?
Will One Midfield Battle Be Decisive?
The midfield showdown between Manchester City’s Rodri and Arsenal’s Declan Rice could determine the champions. This rivalry, which captivated Premier League fans during the season, now takes centre-stage on the European stage.
England’s inability to control the midfield in their last European final against Italy proved costly. Rice, who struggled that night, will be seeking redemption against Rodri, a player renowned for his ability to dominate possession.
Rice has enjoyed an impressive tournament, leading in touches (300) and completed passes under pressure (236). However, Rodri’s expertise in controlling the tempo of the game poses a significant challenge.
Which midfield maestro will emerge victorious and steer their team to glory?
