EPL Players at EURO 2024 – Day 27
England have done it again.
The Three Lions came from behind once more against Netherlands to book their place in the final versus Spain. As part of our EPLNews EURO 2024 report, here is how Premier League players performed in yesterday’s game.
Netherlands 1-2 England
Another England game meant another narrow victory and another “squeeze by” progression through the EURO 2024 knockout rounds, this time to the final in Berlin.
As for the match against Netherlands, this was more like it from England, as they played much better football last night in Dortmund than what they have so far at the tournament. The start of the game saw England on the front foot and taking some risks, but they were promptly punished in the 7th minute by Xavi Simons, who nicked the ball off Declan Rice and fired into the top corner from distance.
It did not take Harry Kane long to get a penalty and equalise from it 11 minutes later, and England continued to press the Dutch team throughout a breathless first half.
The second period saw Netherlands come alive with a couple of chances and it seemed like the tide of the game was turning, despite an England goal that was chalked off due to offside. However, it was once again the Albion who had the last laugh in injury time, as substitute Ollie Watkins sent a laser-guided shot into the bottom corner of Verbruggen’s goal to seal progression for his team.
Premier League players featured heavily in this one, as expected, and there were some outstanding performances. Kobbie Mainoo seemed to pop up everywhere on the pitch and pressed the Dutch successfully a number of times, John Stones and Marc Guehi put on assured displays at centre-half, while Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins came off the bench to combine for the winning goal.
