Which Premier League Stars Will Not Play at Euro 2024?
The European Championship kicks off in Germany in 3 days and, as part of our coverage, today we will be looking at EPL players not participating at Euro 2024.
Erling Haaland – Norway/Manchester City
Manchester City’s star striker has scored 6 goals for his country in qualification games, but it proved to not be enough. His lack of achievements in international football will certainly hold him back in the race for individual honours.
Martin Ødegaard – Norway/Arsenal
Same as with Haaland, the Arsenal playmaker will be disappointed to not qualify with Norway from a group that sent Spain and Scotland to the tournament.
He will be hoping that the summer of 2026 will finally bring his first appearance at a major tournament for his country.
Brennan Johnson – Wales/Tottenham Hotspur
The Welsh winger will have to follow Euro 2024 from afar, as his country failed to qualify from a group with Turkey, Croatia, Armenia and Latvia, and then blew their Nations League play-off path by losing to Poland on penalties.
Other Premier League players who will not be playing with Wales this summer are Fulham’s Harry Wilson, Johnson’s Spurs teammate Ben Davies, and Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams.
Alexander Isak – Sweden/Newcastle United
Another striker from a nordic country? Yes, Isak will have a quieter summer as Sweden also failed to qualify from a seemingly accessible group containing Belgium, Austria, Azerbaijan and Estonia.
Spurs winger Dejan Kulusevski is another important Swedish player who will be watching Euro on the tele.
Marcus Rashford – England/Manchester United
Let’s face it: United did not have a good season, and Rashford was a big part of that. His form in 2023/24 was poor, and England manager Gareth Southgate explained his decision to leave him at home quite simply: “I just feel other players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons – that’s it”.
Can’t argue with that.
Ben White – England/Arsenal
This is a case of the player ruling himself out of contention. Southgate & Co. would have been happy to have him on the plane to Germany, but White decided to not make himself available for selection.
Rumour has it that he did not enjoy himself in the England camp on previous occasions, even leaving the 2022 World Cup early as he struggled to settle in with the others.
Sven Botman – Netherlands/Newcastle
Although the Dutch team can’t complain about the quality of their centre-back options, coach Ronald Koeman would certainly have liked to take Botman to the Euros.
The 24-year-old suffered an ACL injury in March, so he is not even close to doing any proper training.
Jack Grealish – England/Manchester City
Despite his talent and transfer fee, Grealish will be watching Euro 2024 wishing he was there.
Southgate’s decision to cut him from the final squad is backed up by numbers. 3 goals and 3 assists in 36 games in all competitions during the 2023/24 season for City was just not enough for a seat on the plane.
Harry Maguire – England/Manchester United
Unlike Rashford, Maguire had a halfway decent season, and considering England’s centre-back options, the former Leicester City man would have certainly been playing for his country this summer.
However, his calf problems during 2023/24 meant that he was deemed not fit enough for the challenges of a big tournament.
