West Ham United 2023/24 Premier League Season Review

West Ham have concluded the EPL season in 9th place with 52 points, which represents an improvement over the 2022/23 season, when they could only muster a 14th place finish and 40 points.

However, their fans will certainly feel disappointed by the lack of European football next season, after clinching Europa Conference League glory in June 2023.

Read on this West Ham season review to find out how and why the Hammers had a mixed time this term.

Individual Performances

Their player of the season was Jarrod Bowen, who finished the season with 16 goals and 6 assists. Hammers’ fans will be pleased to know that Bowen has signed a new contract with the club back in October, tying him to the side until 2030.

Mohammed Kudus also had a great season after joining West Ham last summer from Ajax, getting 14 goal contributions (8G, 6A) in the EPL to go along with 5 goals in their Europa League campaign.

One of the goals he scored was an amazing overhead kick which you can see here:

Lucas Paquetá also had a hand in 15 goals in all competitions (8G, 7A), showing why he is attracting interest from Manchester City. West Ham will have to keep him and Kudus if they are to improve next season.

James Ward-Prowse too had a decent season, with 7 goals and 7 assists in the Premier League, to go along with 4 other goals created for his teammates in the Europa League.

Managerial Changes

After 4-and-a-half years, David Moyes is leaving West Ham United.

This last season has been a mixed one for the club, as they have conceded the 4th most goals in the league, only behind the 3 relegated teams in this statistic. This points to concerns regarding the quality of the defensive players in the squad.

While Moyes will always be remembered in east London for ending their 40+ year trophy drought, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement for a new era at the club.

Julen Lopetegui has already been confirmed as the new coach, and he comes with a wealth of experience, having been in the dugouts of Porto, Sevilla and the Spanish national team, among others. He was also in charge of Wolverhampton between November 2022 and August 2023, leaving the club on the eve of the new EPL season due to disagreements over transfers.

Looking Ahead

With a new manager come new expectations. The fanbase will surely want their club to challenge for the European places once more, and, with a couple of smart investments, they might just be able to do that.

One name that is reportedly close to signing with West Ham is Flamengo defender Fabricio Bruno, who, despite not having any Premier League experience, will hopefully help to shore up their current porous defence.

They will surely be looking to add further depth to the squad and, if they keep star men such as Kudus and Paquetá at the club, they can mount a challenge for UEFA spots and continue their progress.
