Newcastle 2023/24 Premier League Season Review

After a somewhat surprising 4th place finish at the end of 2022/23 and Champions League participation this season, the Magpies will be disappointed with their 7th place finish this season. They also missed out on their last chance of European football next season after Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph on Sunday.

But how did Eddie Howe’s team really do this season? And what were some of the factors influencing their performances?

Find out in our Newcastle season review below.

Individual Performances

By far the standout player in 2023/24 was striker Alexander Isak.

The Swede scored 21 goals this term to finish 3rd in the Premier League Golden Boot race. He also registered 2 assists, bringing up his total number of goal contributions to 23 in only 27 EPL appearances. The last Newcastle player to achieve similar numbers was Alan Shearer.

Another Magpies player emerging with plenty of credit this season is Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian midfielder scored 7 and assisted 8, but also impressed with his energetic displays in the middle of the park.

Anthony Gordon was no slouch either, as he contributed 21 goals (11G, 10A) in his first full season in black and white.

There were others too, with Callum Wilson, Fabian Schär or Kieran Trippier also doing their best to continue Newcastle’s evolution.

Manager’s Influence

Eddie Howe guided his team to 7th place in the table, while also overseeing an exit from the Champions League ‘group of death’ against AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

Here is what he had to say after their matchday 38 game against Brentford: “I’ve loved this season. When I look back later in life, I’ll only have good memories.

”I think it’s been a season of progression. I know the league position might tell me differently, but my feeling is that we’ve grown stronger as a team. We’ll look back with a tinge of ‘What could have been’ in many aspects.

“We’ve done well — but it could have been so different, it could have been even more memorable, so that will be a frustration that will live with me.“

While context plays a big part in analysing this season for Newcastle, as they have had to contend with a high number of injuries to key players, we can’t help but think that expectations around St. James’ Park are higher than placing 7th.

It will be interesting to see if those in charge of the club will feel like Howe is the man to bring them forward or not.

Looking Ahead

With no European football on the horizon next season, it is expected that Newcastle will be focusing on performing better in the EPL to secure a return to the UCL for 2025/26.

While this will certainly be the priority, we believe that the Magpies’ fans will appreciate a trophy just as much. The FA Cup or the League Cup provide good opportunities for Newcastle to get some silverware, while also ensuring European football if their league performances dip again.

While Isak and Guimarães keep getting linked with exits from the club, Newcastle will probably do all they can to retain them, as well as add some squad depth in crucial positions.

All in all, it promises to be an intriguing summer for this historic club, as they look to return to European football and make the most of a talented squad.
