Tottenham 2023/24 Premier League Season Review
Tottenham, in their first season under Ange Postecoglou, have finished 5th in the EPL table, showing signs of improvement after stumbling to 8th place in 2022/23.
After an unbeaten run in the first 10 games of the campaign, they went into November sitting at the top of the tree. Later on, and especially in the second half of the season, they struggled to match the standards set for themselves in that opening period, so they naturally lost steam.
Today we will be looking into the how’s and the why’s of Spurs in 2023/24 in this Tottenham season review.
Individual Performances
Spurs’ player of the season was arguably Micky van de Ven. Having been brought in last summer, the young No. 37 has quickly imposed himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet when fit.
Naturally, other Tottenham players had big roles in securing Europa League football for next season. Son Heung-min, made captain after the departure of Harry Kane, took up a more central role in attack, notching 27 goal contributions (17G, 10A).
Rising star Destiny Udogie had a great campaign until his season-ending injury in April, while James Maddison almost always looked like he would make things happen when receiving the ball.
And some special praise should also go the way of Guglielmo Vicario for his 110 saves and 31 sweeper clearances (3rd highest among EPL goalies).
Managerial Impact
Ange Postecoglou has been a breath of fresh air for the Premier League, with a no-nonsense, down-to-earth coaching style and demeanour.
His impact on the team can be quantified this season, as they have finished 3 positions and
6 points better than last season.
And it can be argued that the Australian is expecting much of himself, the players, but also the fans, who he criticised for celebrating losing to Manchester City, as it dented Arsenal’s title hopes.
Ange Postecoglou FUMES after Spurs’ defeat to Manchester City 😡
Can’t exactly blame him for always wanting to win, can we?
Looking Ahead
This summer promises to be a fascinating one at Tottenham.
One of the biggest criticisms levelled at Postecoglou has been a lack of a plan B in games when his usual approach doesn’t work.
The question this poses is whether now the people in power at the club will support the manager with transfer funds in order to continue improving. And, if yes, who will they be bringing in?
We’re already looking forward to Tottenham’s next steps ahead of the 2024/25 season.
