Manchester United vs Sheffield United Preview

After a tumultuous FA Cup semi-final that saw Manchester United nearly throw away a 3-0 lead, only to scrape through on penalties against second-tier Coventry, the Red Devils are looking to restore their confidence as they host Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag’s side will hope to use their home advantage to regain form as they pursue European qualification.

Manchester United: Searching for Stability and Consistency

FA Cup Success with a Touch of Drama

Manchester United’s recent FA Cup semi-final performance has drawn scrutiny despite their eventual victory.

Leading 3-0 with 20 minutes left, they allowed Coventry to come back, only to secure the win on penalties. Ten Hag dismissed the notion of embarrassment, but his players’ subdued celebrations (at least from some of them) suggest there may be concerns about their form.

Strong Record Against Newly-Promoted Opposition

Manchester United will take heart from their strong record against newly-promoted teams, with 14 wins from the last 15 matches (W14, D1), including 12 consecutive victories.

This season, they’ve already defeated several promoted sides, demonstrating their ability to capitalise on these opportunities.

Sheffield United: Fighting to Avoid an Unwanted Record

Premier League Survival Seems Out of Reach

Sheffield United‘s 4-1 defeat to fellow relegation strugglers Burnley left them ten points adrift of safety with just 15 points available.

Manager Chris Wilder admitted that the Premier League has been “too strong” for his side, as they face the daunting task of overturning their fortunes at Old Trafford.

A Chance to Upset the Odds

Despite their poor form, the Blades have a glimmer of hope, having beaten Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford in January 2021.

However, even a victory could result in an unwanted Premier League record, as Sheffield United’s 88 goals conceded this season are just one shy of the all-time record for a 38-game season, set by Derby in 2007/08.

Key Players to Watch

Scott McTominay: Manchester United’s Scottish Star

Scott McTominay’s opener at Wembley made him the first Scotsman to reach double figures in a season for Manchester United since Brian McClair in 1991/92.

His season tally includes the opening goal in the reverse fixture against Sheffield United, showcasing his knack for crucial strikes.

James McAtee: Sheffield United’s Away Game Specialist

James McAtee has been a rare bright spot for Sheffield United, with his last four goals for the Blades coming in away matches. His recent performances could be vital if the Blades are to spring a surprise at Old Trafford.

As Manchester United and Sheffield United face off, the stakes are high for both teams.

Manchester United will seek to maintain their strong record against newly-promoted sides and build momentum for European qualification, while Sheffield United aim to avoid an unwanted record and keep their slim survival hopes alive.

With the contrasting form of both sides, this Premier League match promises to be an intriguing encounter with much on the line.
