Bayer Leverkusen vs West Ham Report

Scorers: Hoffman 83’, Boniface 90+1’

In a tactical battle at the BayArena, Bayer Leverkusen secured a crucial 2-0 victory over West Ham United in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final matchup.

Despite facing a staunch West Ham defence, Leverkusen’s persistence and tactical acumen under Xabi Alonso eventually broke down the resilient Hammers, marking a significant step towards the semi-finals.

Tight Defence and Missed Chances Characterize First Half

Leverkusen dominated possession early on, with the home crowd fueling their aggressive start. West Ham, known for their solid defensive structure under David Moyes, initially kept the hosts at bay while attempting quick breaks through Michail Antonio.

Leverkusen’s Amine Adli and Exequiel Palacios were notably active, but their efforts were thwarted by West Ham’s goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański, who made several key saves to keep the game level.

Despite numerous attempts, the first half ended goalless, with both teams missing crucial opportunities to take the lead.

Discipline Problems and Breakthrough

The game’s physical intensity was highlighted by a notable incident involving Lucas Paquetá, who received a yellow card for a foul on Adli, ruling him out of the second leg.

This moment underscored the increasing pressure and frustration for both sides as the match progressed without goals. However, Leverkusen’s relentless attack finally bore fruit late in the game.

Late Goals Seal the Deal for Leverkusen

As the match approached its climax, Leverkusen intensified their attacks, and their breakthrough came in the 83rd minute. Substitute Jonas Hofmann made an immediate impact, scoring shortly after coming on when Kurt Zouma’s initial block fell kindly to him.

Not satisfied with just one goal, Leverkusen doubled their lead minutes later when Hofmann turned provider for Victor Boniface, who headed home to secure a commanding 2-0 lead.

Leverkusen’s Impressive Home Record and West Ham’s Challenge

The victory continues Leverkusen’s perfect record at home in the Europa League this season, setting them up with a strong advantage heading into the second leg at the London Stadium.

Meanwhile, West Ham face a significant challenge, needing to overturn a two-goal deficit without key players Lucas Paquetá and Emerson Palmieri due to suspension.

Ahead of the return fixture, Leverkusen will aim to maintain their disciplined approach and secure their passage to the semi-finals.

For West Ham, the task is daunting but not insurmountable, requiring a strategic masterclass from Moyes to keep their European dreams alive.
