Manchester United vs Liverpool FA Cup Report

Scorers: McTominay 10’, Antony 87’, Rashford 112’, Diallo 120+1’; Mac Allister 44’, Salah 45+2’, Elliott 105’

In an FA Cup quarter-final tie that will be remembered for years, Manchester United secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Liverpool in extra time at Old Trafford, sending them into the semi-finals and ending Liverpool’s hopes for a historic quadruple.

Early Exchanges Set the Tone

The match kicked off with intensity under the lights at Old Trafford, with both teams creating early chances. Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah both had notable opportunities, setting the stage for a high-octane encounter.

Scott McTominay capitalized on a rebound from Caoimhin Kelleher to give United an early lead, highlighting the relentless pace of the game from the outset.

Liverpool’s Late First-Half Resurgence

Just as Manchester United seemed poised to head into halftime with the lead, Liverpool turned the game on its head. Jarell Quansah’s assist for Alexis MacAllister’s goal was quickly followed by Mohammed Salah capitalizing on a rebound, flipping the script and giving the Merseysiders the advantage at the break.

A Second Half of Opportunities

The second half saw Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez and United’s Antony create significant chances, with both goalkeepers being tested. The match’s pace resembled an end-to-end game of basketball, with United pushing for an equalizer. Antony’s late goal in regular time brought the score level, sending Old Trafford into a frenzy and forcing extra time.

Extra Time Drama Seals United’s Victory

Extra time continued the match’s end-to-end nature, with Harvey Elliott putting Liverpool ahead, only for Marcus Rashford to level once again for United.

The climax came in the 121st minute when Amad Diallo scored the winning goal, following a swift counter-attack and an assist from Garnacho. Diallo ended up being sent off for his celebration shortly after.

This victory not only sends Manchester United into the FA Cup semi-finals but also marks a significant moment in their season’s pursuit of silverware.

For Liverpool, it’s a heartbreaking end to their quadruple ambitions but their hopes for a treble remain intact.
